Ultrabooks?

Regardless of manufacturer get accidental damage protection from the manufacturer if offered. the screens can crack if the slightest bit of torsion is applied (open your notebook from a corner instead of the centre or a hinge binds). Not usually covered under warranty (exceptions are made but you often have to fight). Specially if you get a low end ultrabook.

The Win 8 Pro should run any Win 7 program I believe. Might just be driver issues, dunno.

I've heard complaints from customers about various software not running on 8 but nothing off the top of my head. if these customers were with in their return period and not 3-4 months into ownership something could be done for them...

I messed around with it at best buy and personally, I think that the screen flips up at an awkward-*** angle. Also, there's no USB.

Can't he do all those things with a $400 Surface RT?
No USB and the keyboard was disappointingly unresponsive. I was taking a look at the google chromebook for $250 new, but it was slow AS and it only has 16 GB. :S

The more time that passes, the more I wonder if I really need to spend 1200 to write resumes and book plane tickets. I'd be out a lot of money if it got stolen(but then again, it didn't get stolen on my last trip).

This has potential to be good, http://www.technologyguide.com/news...rtible-tablet-with-bay-trail-and-windows-8-1/

I try to stay away from Asus stuff now. Their quality is really lacking. Their stuff for me always breaks within a year or two.

Have they gone downhill? I had an Asus M6N laptop I bought used for half the price of the competition and it lasted me 8 years and was even fast enough to still be quite useable. I compare all my newer laptops to that one. So far I've had a Lenovo T61p and Dell M4600. Both were/are crap in comparison. The Dell less so than the Lenovo but it also cost 3x as much.

Many laptops have their own specific issues. HP being the worst when it comes to overheating/crashing which is why their laptops are so cheap with attractive specs.

Modern day laptops have an expected lifespan of 3 years. I have had an Asus laptop and its still good except for the fact that it has problems with compatibility when ti comes to the Video driver and Flash player. The other issue I had with mine was a high pitch noise the processor made when it was idling which was fixed by setting no idle time for the processor. This would hypothetically shorten the lifespan of the laptop cause the processor would run at 100percent all the time but its lasted me 2 1/2 years and its still good.

Ultrabooks are worth it if its for day-to-day use without high demand of Video quality such as gaming.

My Thinkpad had that and so does my much newer Dell. When I looked into it, it was supposedly a problem with the Intel CPUs and chipsets and was noticeable in many models. Still annoyed the hell out of me. On the newer Dell it's low enough that it doesn't bother me.

If all you're doing is booking plane tickets and updating your resume, then get something for $200 that'll do the job and that's SUPER portable.

Yeah, after I fixed it, it didn't make a sound at all.

Those are the steps to doing so. It should be similar on other laptops.

Yeah I knew it was easy to fix by disabling frequency changes and whatnot but I'd rather put up with it and leave the computer operating like it's supposed to.

I doubt it would affect the life of the machine much. It would probably destroy battery life though.

This!

Dude, just get some Netbook or cheap laptop. Max out the ram on it.
If you know how to work on things, open it up clean out the fan and dust inside.
Install a fresh copy of the OS, only install the apps you want.

done!

Why do you want to give away your money so badly?
Your $1200 purchase today will be worth $600 in 6 months.

You can buy yourself 2 laptops and still have money left over :)

True story: I was headed over to Brampton to check out some guy's macbook air until I saw this post -_-. My curiosity is seriously piqued...but this thing's cutting it close to my departure date. I can't seem to find the release date for the t300 (same thing but 13")...is it October 16th as well?

And do you think this would have a lot of issues? I can't exactly deal with warranty issues or anything like that on the road and I'm afraid it might still be in it's beta stages.

Dude, that trackpoint, thoooooooooough.

imo, some things can't be measured as an investment with the intent of selling. My laptop is one of them. I spent 2k on this thing when it first came out. And maybe the industry standard has changed, but my laptop before that was a Dell which cost a little over 1 grand. Every windows computer I had before this, I'd have to re-format yearly and would be running a lot slower by the 7 month mark. My mac is still almost as fast (it isn't limited by hardware...moreso the fact that I'm still on Leopard...lol. The trackpad is also the only laptop/computer that's let me completely do away with having a mouse (I think that's why I would need a touchscreen to go back to windows).

Anyway, you guys are all right. I'm just hoping that windows has come a long way and will last me 5 years like this did.

Also, I can sell my mac for 450 bucks right now. hahaha I can get the new asus with that!

Since getting an iPad, I barely move my MBP anymore. it sits on the table. I was thinking when it comes time to replace it going with a MacMini. Still can't stand windows regardless of the generation. Considered going hackintosh, but the reason i'm using mac instead of linux or windows is I don't want to **** with my system to make it work.

I just need something that works quickly, has a keyboard, and is portable/as small as possible. I don't care for gaming, so I just need something reliable that works. It's for traveling, so the lighter, the better. I just have to be able to answer e-mails, watch videos/movies, listen to music, etc.

The first instinct is to go with the macbook air. Solid state drive, 9-12 hour battery life, and it's a mac. But it's pricey and not touch screen (I'm not gonna lie...having a keyboard + a touchscreen is pretty badass/convenient).

If this is for motorcycle travel then I'd sugget a $300 NetBook. It won't hurt you in the wallet too much if it gets stolen or breaks. They are very small and portable which is ideal to stick in a pannier, and they'll do surfing, video, emails/blogging, photo editing. It's too bad the NetBook segment is shrinking.

I know a traveling couple on a 9 month backpacking trip who left their laptop at home and took their iPad. They are now shopping for a NetBook because blogging/emailing on a tablet sucks. If you need directions/note taking use your smartphone.

We use ASUS NetBooks and iPhone combos. My last $300 ASUS 1005Ha lasted me over 3 years. Currently on a ASUS 1025CE.

I'd just get a phablet and a decent bluetooth keyboard instead of having a tablet, phone, and laptop, if all I was doing was browsing and some minor word processing. Still nice to have some kind of full fledged machine at home, though.

Right now I just have my Note2 and the Dell M4600. Mostly just use the Dell for gaming, video work, and storing files. Something way less powerful would be fine if I wasn't gaming and doing video stuff, though. I've got an old D620 that I lend out to house guests that works great, although a touch slow with Win7 on it. Cost me $30 through work which is pretty decent for a dual core machine. Had to bump up the RAM to 4gb,though.

Never had a problem not using a mouse on any laptop I've owned, ever, except for games and AutoCAD.

I'd guess that article is about as much as anyone knows about it. If time is a constraint, I'd get a used Macbook Air with Applecare. Applecare is valid internationally

Thanks for all the replies. I picked up a 2011 macbook air for $600 with photoshop, office, and parallel. + I got an extra charger so I can sell it to recoup some costs. With everything said and done, I basically only had to pay 100 out of my pocket it, so it's in the price range of the netbook for me. I'm just going to test it out before deciding if I want to hop on the t300 or something similar.

Sunny, if you're looking for a case/sleeve, I've been hard at work putting a shortlist together. Part of the reason mine lasted so long was because of how meticulous I am with finding the right case. So I can post it here, if you'd like.

I popped by the Windows store at Yorkdale, and I was pretty surprised to find out that they had a physical "type" keyboard available for the RT. I sort of wish I hadn't seen that because it changes everything and makes me really consider it.

Have any of you guys gotten the surface and never looked back? I'm thinking of buying one in the mean time and selling either that or the macbook air once I decide...but I can't really decide between the pro and surface RT.

The only thing that worries me about the surface is that you can only use apps from the windows store. A quick search on google turns up pretty crappy torrent programs...which would be a dealbreaker for me.

The app limitation is for surface RT. Pro can run any windows program.
Keep in mind though the next generation Surface were announced and will be available Oct 22nd.
