Turo Sucks

Interesting , that was a stumbling block for my daughter and boyfriend traveling , owned a house, both employed, but 22. Conventional rental companies no bueno.
My son on the other hand, Im not sure I'd get help him get approved to rent a scooter in Cuba

my favourite is the surprise credit card hold that wasn’t in the fine print when you booked the vehicle.

In 2016 we drove around the entirety of Iceland. Imagine our surprise when we arrived to get the rental only to find out they wanted a $3k EURO hold on our credit card. Thankfully we brought one with a hefty limit, something we usually don’t do while travelling.

Its always the fine print. In Italy if you dont take the "add on Insurance" even though you are very well insured through the card you rented on, and the Ins you may have at home, expect them to find 9 specs of fly poop that is now your fault.
That and the fact like Paris, they park by braille .

When renting a car, I always factor in the extortionary insurance prices and pay it. It makes the whole transaction simple. Throw them the keys and you're good. Avoids the whole four or five figure surprise bill for fly poop that you have no way of fighting.

I carry a rider on my car ins that covers whatever vehicle I rent. It's OPCF forty something, and costs about $40 /yr.

I have that too but I'd rather not use it. I assume using it would kill my rating and hurt me in the future. I have no issue with honest claims but there are far too many stories of rental companies sending a big bill after you are gone, blaming you and you have no way to fight it. I want that situation to cost me zero, not thousands.

I always wait for the min wage kid to do the "looksee", they sign off, I sign off. Only crap I get after the fact are toll charges. F'n Florida.

Too many stories of bills for mechanical or undercarriage issues and they tack on charges for months of rentals that the vehicle misses as it's out of service. No rush to fix it as its 100% rented as long as it's broken and utilization will drop after it is fixed. Some rental companies/locations seem to incorporate this in their business model as it happens so often.

I’ve got credit card coverage as well and only use that.
I also take a video of the exterior/interior of a rental when I pick it up and when I drop it off. That way there’s no “That scratch was there when I picked it up” arguments. I’ve only needed the video once and that shut them down pretty quick when I forwarded them the video.

That's exactly the issue. Guilty unless you can prove yourself innocent. Try to prove a cv boot wasnt ripped or oil pan whacked when they say you did it.

Circa 2012. Buddy and I go to vegas, the long way. Tor to LA, rent car, drive to vegas and back for flights.
New Malibu. We're lost, returning to LAX. Buddy pulls up to a spot at a 7/11 for directions and destroys ALL cooling lines when he hit the concrete thing in the parking spot.
Instantly, the car is steam/smoke filled. We were 30 minutes from LAX. No clue how we made it, but we did, with no coolant at all, temp guage was buried, gas was on fumes and it was 110⁰F in the shade.
I waited for the inspection. No problems, other than the empty gas tank. We were charged their exorbitant gas rate to fill up, and that was that.
(Pity the poor fool that rented it next).

A friend returned his rental with a full tank to avoid the agency gouge. The next morning, waiting for the airport shuttle, he saw an agency worker siphoning gas from the car so the next guy wouldn't start with a full tank.
