truck shops..

Can anyone on this site recommend a shop I can service my truck at? Someone you have tried, and is legit a good person, that stands by their work..

If nothing else I guess I could go to a dealership.. I read reviews of local shops around Richmond Hill and most of them have bad reviews.. I would trust a lot of people on this site over a random reviewer so opinions are very welcome.

My truck won't go into its final gear now, I noticed this problem after hauling a small trailer, and I want to get this issue fixed before it snowballs into some huge problem.

Another new symptom I noticed was it takes longer for it to shift out of first gear.. no check engine light at all..

Thanks for anyone willing to throw out an opinion.

What are your transmission fluid levels like?

Low fluid levels delay shifts.

Thank you for that tip. I'll check that right now if its possible by myself, if not I'll just take it to a shop to have them quote me on whatever is wrong.

This is actually my first truck and I haven't spent a lot of time researching it like I probably should have. I'm not getting any warnings on my display of low fluids. It usually warns me about those kinds of things.

Someone on gtam owns(runs?) a transmission shop. IIRC it's in etobicoke.

Transmission fluid should have a dipstick. Don't trust idiot lights, actually pop the hood and look at your fluids once in a while (brake, coolant, transmission, oil, power steering)

Precise Transmission 905-238-6770 Mike
Closer to home, you have Newmarket Transmission 905-853-6722 Joe

What kind of truck is it? make / model / year / kms?

Perrrrrrrrfect.

I owe you beer.. just PM me your brand..

I'll take it to Joe tomorrow morning.
He is a good guy, great customer service according to local friends and neighbours, that go there! It was my old neighbour Nick (they went to school together), who told me about him.
You owe me nothing. However, I would love the feedback after your visit and repairs, good or bad!

Chevy Avalanche 2008 LTZ 112,000 km. I did some reading and found that apparently this model year does have some issues with the trans.. I'll see what the mech says about it.

Thanks for the link dude. I will for sure let you know how it goes.

Re final gear: Have you checked to make sure you didn't press your overdrive switch?

Yes I checked for that.

might want to put the scanner on it and see what the readings are.

is it a six speed or four speed automatic

So I took it to Newmarket Trans.. They hooked a scanner to it and found that it wasn't those 2 sensors. It just so happened that he was working on the same trans from another truck, so he showed me all the possible culprits. I should know what the problem is soon, or if it will need a full rebuild. They were all very nice bunch of guys..

These are the symptoms:1 and 3 work.. 2nd and 4th do not.. reverse works.. the problem arose suddenly. 1 day it worked the next it didn't. The fluid smells lightly burned but not too bad.. (4 speed auto)

Take it to a dealer... You may have warrantee or goodwill.

sounds like a 2, 4 band is broke or burnt. if it is then it will have to come out and disassembled to be fixed.

Does that Avalanch have the 4.8 V-8 with the 4 speed? And not the newer 5.3 V-8 with the 6 speed?

I thought that truck not sold with a 5 year 160k power train warranty?!? no?

Wait it is...

This should apply to CHEVY TOO....(Source: http://www.gmc.com/owners/warranty.html)

Here is the chevy version.....(http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/services/chevrolet/warranty/new-vehicle-limited-warranty)

Powertrain Component Warranty

  • First 5 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first.
  • $0 deductible on repairs.
  • Warranty is fully transferable at no extra charge.
  • Engine Coverage (some exclusions).
  • Transmission/Transaxle Coverage (some exclusions).
  • Transfer Case Coverage (some exclusions).
  • Drive System Coverage (some exclusions).

Did you change your transmission oil / filter at 80K as the maintenance schedule says so?

^^ also if it a common issue and it's out of warrantee, they can "goodwill" the repair. This could mean you pay only a deductible, or split the cost... Or some variation of these options.
