Triumph Motorcycles to Enter Motocross and Enduro Segments

I saw this and genuinely had a moment wondering if it was April 1st...

I guess they are jealous of KTM's sales figures and want to cover all segments in the opposite direction.

want to play with the big boys and have a racing presence I guess
other than bribing FIM to have their engines in moto 2 bikes
I'm not aware of a racing presence? Rally races maybe?

Lots of racing for dirt bikes. AMA supercross probably 2nd to MotoGP in terms of viewership across all two wheel racing. MXGP, AMA MX, EnduroGP, GNCC series, Rally races you mentioned and then a bunch of smaller series as well. All have a extremely loyal fanbase that spends money on bikes.

They never could make a competitive bike for production racing, as their sportbikes couldn't keep up with the Japanese at the height of the 1000/600 arms race. The T595 was porky and underpowered, and the TT600 wasn't much better. Early on, Triumph was very aware of the previous incarnation of Triumph's reputation for fragility, so built heavy but very reliable bikes. Not ideal for racing.

The Daytona triples were/are a lot better, but they never did do much beyond the Moto2 thing. I think the 675 version competed against i4 600's in BSB, but not sure how they fared.

They seem to be very race focused with this venture, though, with Ricky Carmichael and Ivan Cervantes front and centre. It'll be very interesting to see how they do and what kind of bikes appear on showroom floors...

Us ol' guy know Triumph and BSA have a rich MX and enduro history that this company is trying to cash in on
Steve McQueen rode one, I rode one.

Interesting.

Selfishly, I hope they go a little bit retro in their approach. By that I mean a less intense off road capable bike where I can have meaningful power to get to the woods (highway capability not necessary) and enjoy single track in 3rd gear, quality suspension to traverse the roots and rocks, a seat made for sitting once in a while, and a low enough seat height that someone 6' tall can get their feet on the ground when necessary.

Aside from the seat, I just described my 1999 KTM300EXC.

excited for this, triumphs offerings have been looking good lately. However, I don't know if they can be competitive. They don't have the current pedigree or money to throw at this like other manufacturers.
definitely would be interested in a triumph enduro/dual sport though if the price was right.

But we all know that bike has nothing in common with a Hinckley Triumph

Cool pipe though... it wouldn't work, but it was cool they tried in 1967

cool. but if they want my money, make a 700cc lightweight triumph that still looks like a british/UJM motorcycle priced at 7-8K out the door and i'll take it!
shiiiiet even the affordable t7 starts at 12k

He picked that bike up at the factory and rode it back to the hotel.

Dual sport is a growth segment lately. Seems there's a lot more people who want to explore back roads and trails. Not sure about MX. I'm not surprised to see them go where the money is. There's certainly room in the 400cc class where competition is weak.
