Trailers, Campers and RVs…

I've been camping for most of my life... tents, tent trailers, and travel trailers. Some thoughts, in no particular order:

We love our trailer, and are out at least a weekend a month from May to Oct; and a week or two in the summer....

Now I’m pretty sure the crossbars on any car I’ve seen typically have a pretty small weight limit….like 50-75lbs…
Yup but also people routinely install those and I couldnt find reports of failures. Static weight would be in the ballpark of 500 lbs with a few adults up there. Ladder takes some of the weight.

@Scuba Steve give @mimico_polak first dibs as it's his thread...
This is mine I can take some fresh photos if anyone is interested. It has always been stored inside so I have to pull it out to get pics. Everything works just in puslinch if you want to see it. Has new alloy wheels and tires on it now.

That’s the old one or new one? Looks pretty good! Too bad it’s too heavy for my car.

So saying that…what would I need to actually tow something like that? Seems like an F150 is the bare minimum.

1500 pickup is no issue dry weight is 3800 lbs probably 4500 loaded up. I used to tow it with a 5cyl GMC canyon, now a 6 cylinder GMC Sierra. No issues at all. That is the old one this is the new one.

@mimico_polak you posted this in the Any GTAM'ers have a tiny/micro camper thread back in 2021...did you ever call them?...I watched a few of their videos and they seem to be pretty light, even for their biggest unit...and they are fully customizable to your needs/wants...

Thanks for the reminder totally forgot that thread!

I’ll give them a call to get some further info. Currently this is more of an exercise to get our bearings as costs are still quite high with COVID pricing.

I did some more research and we may rent a few diff models from RVEEZY(?) to see what fits out camping style prior to pulling the trigger.

Better spent 1000$ to try things out than drop 20k or more to find out we hate if.

Sweet. As a guy with a Roadtrek camper van I would say this is the way to go. Fits in a regular parking spot. Easy to back up. Park anywhere stealth. AND zero set up time once you arrive. (that said there are just the 2 of us - they are snug)

The depressing side of RV's

My buddy's RV has delamination and has been patched by pouring epoxy down inside the wall cavity and clamping.

A few personal comments:

For me a hotel is a place to sleep and get a shower in the morning. I don't sleep well if things are crawling around at night or in bed with me.

We had a park model RV trailer with the main differences from non-park being a patio door and different holding tanks.

I wanted one with a shower and it took a 28 footer to do that. Theoretically it would sleep eight.

A couple in the private BR up front, a couple on the pull out sofa, a short couple on the fold down table and a pair of kids in the bunk beds.

Reality is that tight quarters get tiring very fast. The 28 footer was fine for the three of us as the park had amenities like a pool, beach, rec hall snack bar etc.

Packing too much stuff or people into a small space and a normal weekend gets on everyone's nerves, especially if the weather turns sour.

I recall the story of a hald dozen guys going remote cruising on a 26' sailboat that had a porta-potty. The quantity of beer brought aboard exceeded the potty capacity. Then there was the pizza and wings.

I towed a three ton boat with a F-100, straight six, three on the tree, It was OK on the level, didn't like going up hills but the trailer brakes were good coming down the other side. The clutch didn't like maneuvering, particularly in reverse.

@Scuba Steve I'd like to know more about the buying process from a US dealer and importing the van into Canada...I looked online, however I'm finding conflicting information...TIA
Still in the middle it is pretty straight forward I will update after it is here. I am having a small issue with it being a 23 model and the year being 22 now apparently the government has trouble with things from the future. If it was a 22 it would be here already.
