Trailer ownership with you in vehicle?

For the record, I believe that as of 2021 digital copies of documents like this are acceptable now, same as how a digital copy of an insurance slip is allowable now.

So a good quality photo of the ownership, saved in your notepad would probably be acceptable.

There are of course the question of handing your phone over to a LEO to provide said documents. Our insurance companies app walks you through how to enable guided-access to password lock your screen to a particular page (in this case, the pink slip in the insurance companies app) if you are asked to hand over the phone vs just showing it. The same would work for having a photo of ones ownership.

With the phone locked on a particular page you can hand over your phone without any concern for the LEO browsing anything else they want to see, which I believe is legal for them to do if you willingly hand over your device.

Done right, it's convenient. Done wrong, you're inviting a LEO to poke through whatever else they want on your phone.

There is nothing incriminating on my phone but I'm not handing it over. If theyre feeling extra prickish, they may "accidentally" drop your phone and there is no recourse for you if it breaks. Photocopies in my glove box to hand to the cop.

Same basically, but also same.

I think most people's experiences is that the officer just wants to see it on the screen and doesn't need to actively take your phone to further verify things. Reality is everything's electronic now, they know before they even get out of their car who the car is registered to, if the plate is valid and matching, and if you have valid insurance. The process of handing over an ownership and insurance slip is mostly moot now, although ones physical DL would probably still needed for them to go back to the cruiser and write your ticket if that's going to happen.

However, with the screen lock put in place showing only the approved screen, it would be pretty harmless at that point yeah, aside from the "oops I dropped it" aspect if you give them reason to go that route.

Photocopies in each vehicle and a pic on my phone for each ownership and ins slip I have.

Digital pictures are great, but does this mean you'd have to give your unlocked phone to LEO so he can return to his vehicle to validate info in his system?

That's the exact reason I only keep photocopies in the car. Zero chance I'm giving my phone willingly to LEO if I can help it.

You could conceivably figure out the path to do it securely. One way is setting the photo as your lock screen photo. Quick way to piss off the cop though if they can't zoom to read it, they need to keep coming back to you to get the other required documents, etc. Many cops don't like digital documents as they don't want the hassle of dealing with an expensive piece of technology.

Some people must lose things. I've always kept the original documents in the vehicle. Usually in a ziplock baggie.

I don't want the originals in the car. If someone steals the car, then they have an ownership that they can sign to sell it. Just adds hassle to your life. Secondly, if a dbag rifles through your car and steals your ownerships, now you have to pay to get them replaced. Photocopies (of both sides) are legal and avoid both of those issues.

Tbh, I'd be really happy if it was legal to have a redacted copy of my ownership. Lots of cars are stolen/broken into and then they have your address and garage remote. Wtf. An ownership with VIN, make, model and my name should be more than enough for a cop. The rest of the information they can get from their computer if required.

That is exactly how they broke into a neighbor's house several us ago.
Broke into the car while the owners were at a banquet hall. Theif figured that if they are at the banquet hall, they are not at home.
Drove up to the house. Broke in through a windows and stole a bunch of stuff.

I have been keeping documents in glovebox for convenience and ease of access. I may consider a more discrete location but it may cause me some grief in a traffic stop. While telling a cop what you are doing helps, they get justifiably jumpy if you are digging around locations where they can't clearly see your hands.

A few years ago, I got pulled over on the Hwy 400 at the infamous Canal Rd location.
I couldn't find my documents easily so I was searching for a good 5 min. During this time I was talking to the cop and trying to plead my case.
Eventually found them.

To my surprise he must have been convinced or maybe it was my smile. But I do believe that the 5min that I took to look for the documents and stall the situation got me off with a verbal "please slow down" .

Lucky me as I was 5 km/h from picking up the car from the impound lot.

Unbeknownst to be, this area was an 80 km/h zone due to the construction way south of here. So my 125 km/h seemed normal and the speed of traffic.

Don't get me started on the permanent 80 km/h speed limit for much of the 400 south of barrie. So little construction activity. Approximately zero people drop to 80 km/h and when someone does it causes a disaster with high closing speeds and not a lot of room (and they are almost exclusively in the middle lane when they do this).
