Looks like my Tacoma is tops in its category for value retention and Toyota took 6 other categories, the most of any manufacturer for 4 years running. This is is my second Toyota and neither have ever seen a mechanic other than an oil change. My previous Tacoma had 130 000 and still had the original brakes when I sold it, put gas..oil.. air filter and go.
Anyone else have any stories of longevity of your Toyota

Suffice to say I am sure SunnYs will be a chiming in cause Honda got tops in two Categories :D

Here is a link to the news story and list of all the categories: http://globalnews.ca/news/1144831/toyota-vehicles-take-top-marks-in-best-retained-value-awards/

all I'm going to say is.... don't expect that type of miracle quality and reliability from your M-B...... :)

Love my '06 Tacoma....225,000k on it now. Had to do the brakes last winter and the engine pulleys were squealing bad but that's about it. I bought it with 176,000 on it. Original clutch as well....

I had a 12 year old Chevy Venture up until this year.

I'm thinking that if I drive them into the ground, I don't much care about the residual value after 3 years, that they measure.

I couldn't see buying a car and only keeping it for three years. It's barely broken in by then, only a hundred thousand k. or so.

Tacomas have been the best truck for resale for a long time now, but I'm not so impressed with my 2014 taco(leaking door seals creating a annoying noise when driving on the highway, AC fan makes a buzzing noise on the highest setting, block was leaking coolant, plastic bed/tailgate a death trap in the winter, no better fuel economy than my 1983 K5 Blazer with a 6.2L Diesel) . Once the lease it up I'm going to buy a real + old truck again.

2001 toyota corolla...242000km and it's never seen a mechanic except an IAC valve replacement recently because the idle revs were too high. Bought the part off of ebay for $90 and now i have trouble knowing if the car is on since it is so silent! Car is ugly as hell but i dont care!

I think most people either have no clue how to fix anything themselves, or cant be bothered, or just want something new and shiny all the time so they just hop onto the lease train.

Manufactures only have warranties to cover what they believe to be the trouble free life of the vehicle, and most people I know are scared of potential breakdown bills with used cars.

Sounds standard for any shop. Many places are replace shops instead of repair shops
So true. Plus they're only replacing the parts based on likelihood that they've failed. It can be cheaper than taking the time to test out all the possibly defective components if they swap out the right part. But when they guess wrong, they make excuses and move on to the 2nd most likely component to fail. This can go on for a very long time and sometimes the problem is never fixed even with all new parts.

Diagnostics is a lost art.

Diagnostics is a lost art.

I think its down to the fact that its hard work to properly diagnose a problem and you have to know how all the systems work individually as well as a system. So if you get a half *** mechanic (ive worked with quite a few) its easier for him to just replace the most common part that would cause the problem and send it back to the customer. (makes him look good at the time since he gets a job done quick and moves onto the next one)...

On the flip side, I would take the time to test everything in the system, staple my findings to the work order(in case it ever comes back where the customer trys to blame me for an unrelated problem, I have proof of my work). Now my boss might not like that I dont pump out as much as the next guy, but my jobs would never come back and those half *** joes I worked with didnt stay employed very long.

Also have to consider that most customers are cheap bastards, and complain about diagnostic fees(which is usually a flat rate, yet it might take you a few hours to find the actual problem)... its sometimes better to just take a quick look and pick the most common problem

When it comes to rebuilds, sometimes its more cost effective to just replace the part vs spending hours rebuilding something. And my parts manager was happier if I could find more parts to replace vs fix since he would make more money.

wow... do i ever ramble on...

If it is a 2014 shouldn't it be under warranty? Have no idea if Toyota service is any good or not but I would be complaining big time.

I hear ya, the mileage isn't the greatest and I agree it is not the quietest ride but it is a truck.

Which one did you get? I got the limited edition. As for the tailgate and bed I got the weathertech bedliner it is awesome... the rubber wraps right up the sides and front keeps all the mess in check.

Baggsy I tried the "driving it to the ground thing" many many years ago and don't like being stranded which causes lost time working... I would rather be enjoying a new vehicle instead of giving my hard earned dollars to the taxman. Its a 100% write off

Never ever got stranded in the Chev.
We donated her to the Fire department for them to practice the jaws of life on.
Both the heater and A/C went in the same year.
She needed about $2500 and new tires just to keep her on the road.
So it was a good time to part company.

My dad's mini van's are older still (15 years), and still running strong.
He's got a Ford and a Dodge, but takes better care of them.

The only car that ever stranded me was a Buick LeSabre that had been converted to an Airline limo and then improperly converted back. My brother-in-law sold it to me, go figure. It was a blessing in disguise, as it was the first car that I ever had to put $100 worth of gas in, and that was when prices were lower than now.
The engine kind of imploded, and started leaking oil all over the place.

I heard about the poor mileage from the V6 Tacoma.I ordered mine with the 4 cyl and couldn't be happier (I can get 28mpg).I have no intention of towing anything so I don't care about the lack of grunt.
I have owned a few Hondas and the best one is by far my Wing.My wifes 2010 Civic is a very reliable tin can.Totally gutless, but it works for her.The worst car I ever owned was a Honda Accord. But that was many years ago before Honda got their **** together.

My father in law has a 98 sienna with about 330k. Engine light came on last year but hes been driving it anyway for the last 6 months and it runs fine.

My previous taco was 4X4 4 cyl stick shift. It was special order none in Ontario at the time. The regular sr5 4 banger came with the mini wheels and just didn't look right.
Ya can't go wrong with the Wing for sure the continental missle :)

It is under warranty and its a pain to keep having to go back for them to "fix" the problems I have.

Mine is a 4cyl 4x4 manual trans and I only get 19mpg

I have the bed mat from toyota, but that tailgate is still an accident waiting to happen

Im not complaining about "truck" noises, nor do I consider this toy a truck anyway, I call it my camry with a big rubbermaid trunk... Im talking about faulty weather stripping where i get a howling noise from the driver side window/door area when driving on the highway on windy days. The dealer told me its a known problem and a solution hasent been issued yet.

That's not the first time I heard the camry thing. LOL
I once had a durango 10 years ago with wind howling noise and after complaining about it I was sent to an aftermarket company on their coin who fixed it so can't see why that can't be solved.
