Toronto to Quebec City

A little log of my 2,000 km ride from Toronto to Quebec City, passing through Port Hope, Trenton, Brockville, Montreal, Trois Rivieres, Quebec City, Kemptville, Buckhorn and the Kawarthas before returning to Toronto.

I'll be doing about 1,000 km of this trip two-up, as girl found a flight from Toronto to Montreal for $85 so she could meet me there and save herself some of the saddle time. No complaints from me!

I/we are traveling on a BMW G650GS, a 650cc single that wasn't really designed for two up touring in mind, but hey, it'll be a lot more comfortable and capable of hauling our stuff than the V-Rod (I just sold anyway), so why not?

If you’re not stopping in Montreal consider going around the top to bypass it. Hawkesbury then highway 50 I think let’s you skip most of the madness and crappy roads. Spits you back out on the correct bank for Trois Rivieres and is a nicer ride to boot!
 
For Day 1, it's just me alone. I'll be taking Highway 401 from Toronto to Port Hope to Brockville.


I know most will say, "It's not the destination, it's the ride, take the back roads!" Well, this is my trip, so, no. I wanted to get as clear of the city as fast as possible, so I took the 401. It's 15 lanes wide near my place, gets up to 18 lanes wide further down the road, and since I was leaving mid-day, I could make quick progress without paying for the 407.

Fun fact about the 401: It's the busiest highway in North America, with the stretch passing through Toronto seeing over half a million cars per day.

Quick break at the Port Hope On Route about an hour outside of town just to check on the bike, bags, and take a bathroom break.

My first real stop was at Primitive Designs in Port Hope which was really friggen cool. Dinosaurs, dragons, transformers, rhinos, giant iguanas, this entire place is an acid trip's best friend. Check out the video and you'll see what I mean.

Made a stop at The Big Apple in Colborne Ontario just to bite the world's biggest apple. Very little taste. Do not recommend. If you're into baked sweets, this is the place to be. If you aren't into baked goods you can just stop for a quick pic and then keep on going.

One more quick pit stop at Trenton On Route just to get some caffeine in me and some gas in the bike. At this point I rode 175 km on just 7 liters of gas which delighted me because I daily drive a 5.4 liter V8 pickup around, so the fuel economy on the BMW G650GS always makes me happy.

After that, with rain threats looming, it was time to just hammer down, stop taking so many damn breaks, and gun it to Brockville Ontario. I found a place to stay for free with strangers from the internet on Bunkabiker, and when I told them a bit about me they offered me a free home cooked meal too. Didn't wanna be late, and since I was dickin around all day I decided no more breaks, just go.

Fun fact about Brockville: It was actually founded by Americans! After the american revolutionary war, the loyalists packed their sh- stuff, crossed the St. Lawrence River, and established Brockville in what was still British America (aka Canada), and named a town after General Brock.

Total distance traveled: 352 km

Although little known, the oldest railway tunnel in Canada actually exists under the downtown core of Brockville, Ontario, the tranquil community located on the shores of the St Lawrence River at the eastern edge of the Thousand Islands.

Re: Montreal - spent a couple nights there, didn't find the traffic too bad. Born and raised in downtown Toronto so this whole trip has been a breeze compared to my daily riding/driving.
 
CHAPTER 2: SIXTY FEET UNDER

Day 2 of my 2,000 KM motorcycle trip! A tunnel 60 ft under Brockville, trying to decide if I should ride two hours in the rain to Montreal, or stay in town, and some weird pink pills...
