Toronto To Montreal.

So I am going to do a little trip from Toronto to Montreal and back on 8th June to catch the Grand Prix. Was wondering if I can get some great advice from my people here about Do’s and Don’ts’ for the trip. This will be my very first Long trip in Canada on Canadian Highways. Longest I have rode in one stretch in Toronto is to Niagara and back.

Also, what are the places to stop by on the way?

Plus, parking in Montreal Downtown, is it free same as Toronto or else ?

Lastly, engine oil top up, chain lub, gas cable check, tire check. Please point out what I might be missing here.

Thanks for all the help.

Hope ya like driving straight. Terribly boring highway ride.

Watch your speed when you cross into Quebec. They have cops all over and are not lenient on speeding. 20 over will get you a ticket.

The last three times in the recent year there was bad construction during my drive to montreal, added a couple hours to the drive.........I invented a lot of new swear words tho. Porter is the way to go. The train sucks balls too.

EDIT, ill add the roads in montreal are absolutely horrible too. Makes torontos duffrin st look like riders heaven.

You can go 33 starting at Quinte. My fav is to go north through Minden, Bancroft, then down from Arnprior. Ville Montreal is brutal in the summer, I'd try to find accommodations around the Montmorency subway station then use the train into the city. Also makes beering easier.

go south into NYS
east across NY then into Vermont
take a left at Lake Champlain and head up to MTL
no highway riding
but a lot longer day

edit: but I see you're looking for curvy routes
curves are not designed into roads to make them fun
your route is basically following the St. Lawrence Seaway
flat as a pancake and no need for curves

personally I like the train
sure it's expensive and slow
but if you have any business or whatever to do it's handy
your phone works the whole way
and you have more space than a porter turbo prop

Just ride like you are from Quebec!

If not highways then are there any other more scenic or curvy routes ?

Yes, I've ridden a few times from Toronto to Ottawa and it was an amazing and scenic route, every time. The problem is, I planned my trip so it was more about the ride than the destination. If you stay North of the 401 you can hit some great roads. The problem is, it's almost a full day of riding to do it right and that will only get you to the border at Ottawa. Then you've got some more to Montreal which I've never explored. If I were you I'd plan to leave a day early to enjoy a nice scenic ride there, or train/plane as suggested. You couldn't pay me to slab it on the 401 to Montreal.

.... You couldn't pay me to slab it on the 401 to Montreal.
When I was in the service industry I rode my K100RS to places like Montreal, Windsor and North Bay at 80 bucks per hour, I thought it was pretty cool. You just need a motorcycle that eats up highway.

... and ride like you are from Quebec ;)

if you want to take a break from the 401 but still be close to it. Try highway 2. Starts somewhere in Oshawa and ends somewhere in South Lancaster.
The only part I know is from Cobourg to Belleville. This little section is nice and you get to check out small town living and apple country

If you can go the night before, you can head up to Ottawa via some curvy roads, stay over for the night,
and then head in to Montreal which will take a couple of hours or less.

If you're taking 401, watch out for the OPP around the Gananoque/1000 Islands cut off. There's always a cop there. Always.
Not always, there's a couple of other spots where they sit as well. The days of Toronto to Montreal in under 4 hours are long gone.

Past montreal towards vermont in the hills is where quebec gets fun. Its absolutely gorgeous and the roads are legit. Its far tho......

Unless you know someone that lives there, Downtown is packed and parking expensive. Even for bikes. Hotel rates are crazy expensive and sold out a year in advance etc.

Road construction, road closures make for for gridlock.

Advise of train is best.

Otherwise determined to ride, head north from Peterborough towards Quebec and then make your way east.

Good luck!

I don't even mind taking the 401 all the way. Get to Montreal in under 5 hours and you win a prize!

Once you're there, you can ride up into the Laurentians which is beautiful.

I'm with others - the 401 route is boring as hell, but hey...a ride is a ride I guess. Depends on how well you zone out and enjoy the ride vs wanting scenery and interesting roads.

If you have the time you can make it a little less boring by taking the 35/115 up to Highway 7 and going across that way, through Ottawa, and then onto Montreal. Or the USA route others mentioned. Both will be more interesting, but both will take you considerably more time, so if you're in a time crunch...make sure you've plotted it out very carefully beforehand to fully understand how much time you're adding by going that route. Google maps generally has realistic travel times when you plot it out, or Furkot is extremely powerful as well once you learn how to use it - it's confusing as hell.

Waze is an invaluable tool in big cities, so if you can, use it - especially in Montreal - traffic in that city can be crazy and unpredictable so it can easily save you an hour+ just getting into and out of the city.

I'm going to MTL myself a week today and will be riding, barring a forecast that shows nothing but rain for 2 days...who knows the way this spring is going. I'll probably be taking the 401 both ways simply due to the fact it's fastest.
