Tools for the Tourer

Greetings folks,

I'm heading out for what many riders here would probably consider a "short" jaunt, but for me it'll be my longest ride: approx 850 km from Niagara to the New Liskeard area.

I "think" I'm prepared, except for tools. I have little idea what to bring.

The roads are paved except for one stretch of dirt/gravel at the end that goes on for around 10 km or so.

What do you folks pack on longer tours? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

for most people, longer tours means days. for 850km just bring whatever you would bring for a 100km trip except for some chain lube.

For a 100 km trip, I don't take anything. Or, at least, I haven't taken anything when perhaps I should have.

As for chain lube, my bike ('87 Yamaha Virago 535) is shaft drive, so I guess that solves that issue! ; )

Thanks for the advice!

x 2. CAA Plus is a must for the biker.

I also purchased an Emergency Tire repair kit from Ready Honda Powersports. It was inexpensive and is great piece of mind.

For a trip of that length, which is similar for me as a day trip to Elephant Lake, I'd bring:
-Cold Weather Gloves
-Warm weather gloves
-Long sleeve sweater
-My GPS (just incase)

...and if there was a chance of rain, my rain jacket. Also some visor wipes and clean cloth might be good too.

On longer trips I would take more clothes obviously, as well as a spare visor, Spare Oil filter, Chain Lube, small assortment of tools, Duct Tape....as wel las some other misc stuff

tire plugs
zip ties
duct tape
bike's tool kit
hex keys
spare fuses
caa plus card

Point taken about CAA Plus - got that one covered!

Thanks all for the advice. My bike didn't come with a tool kit (lost somewhere in the mists of time with previous owners...) so I guess I'll cobble something together.

Best Regards,
Mark

If its just a day trip, I would pack rain gear, an extra visor for night riding (I ride with tinted visor). I always have my tool kit with me and a tire pump. That would be it. Longer then a day its a different story.

To do that distance in one day I make sure my Throttle Rocker is on the bike.

Rain gear, my clear visor, and glass wipes for my visor.

Plus my CAA card.

A tire repair kit of some sort as I've had some issues on past trips, levers, patches, glue for my tubes and some CO2 that I got at mec for 10 dollars.

If you run into trouble put your helmet behind your rear tire. It's a sign that you are broken down.

Have fun!

Had to by this wheel nut socket for my Ducati and carry it under the seat all the time. Without it the wheels aren't coming off anywhere other than a Ducati dealer.

Oh, that just hurts to think about.

i am pretty sure most mech shops have dealt with their own share of sssa bikes! triumph, duc, bmw etc

I did the ride from Hamilton to New liskeard. I just made sure my chain was lubed/tight, tire pressure was good. since it's only <1000km round trip and I have CAA I just brought a tire repair kit. Wish I had brought my clear visor since I didnt make it up there until 11:30pm and was riding alone in moose territory getting pelted by rain/sleet cause i had my tinted visor up(very scary feeling of having to flip between visor up and down having limited visibility to like no visibility visor down).

It's a good ride though if you take a small detour through the muskokas. hwy 518 is so fun! going from the 400 to 11

Funny. I can't find a shop that can mount my rear wheel on their balancer yet.

And now you know why I always ride with my clear visor stuffed into an old sock.

I'm glad you had fun.

meh, 850km in these populated areas is nothing to fret over.

did learn a VERY valuable lesson on a 6000km trip last week.

4 min epoxy, the one that you mush together like playdo, can be jammed in both sides of a rad to fix a leak.

we were 200km from any major town, this tiny little 200 person town with a very small and scary auto shop...he just jammed that epoxy in this guys rad like no ones business...charged 75 for the labour and inconvenience and it was fixed and held up NP for the rest of the trip!

+1000 for 4 min epoxy, fits in your trunk np...tiny tube. fixes anything

+1 to murdochville QC

auto goop is amazing, but epoxy turns hard like metal

i guess in that radiator case, goop would have worked nicely

oh an the best tool i brought was the BeadRider seat...my *** was amazing every day.

most days 8+ hours of riding, 2 of the 7 days was just get out there straight boring riding..hurt a bit but doing 200 km straight id be paralized without it.
