Too many Cops chasing to little crime

COPS are working for the banks now.
We have been conditioned to be scared of the common crook, while in fact the bankers are stealing indirectly from us through inflation and taxation. People need to wake up to this.

the officers are paid the good money to take flak, insults etc from angry drivers when you close down a street. you would be very surprised how angry the public get at an officer when he closes the street.

its not the construction workers job to handle that, that is why police are brought in. toronto drivers try to drive around police, they would try to run over a security guard if he tried to close down a street..

just because you have a police uniform does not mean that all drivers will suddenly obey you!!

That'd be all well and good if the police actually targetted crappy drivers. Instead all I see is unmarked cruisers hidden behind bushes catching people doing a harmless 65 in a 50 zone that should be a 60 anyway...
Exactly. If the cops actually did anything about crappy drivers instead of just handing out speeding tickets, I might like them around a little more.

Exactly!!!
At the end of their day, you know they are just civilian drivers, and they see same crap we see.... but once uniform is on, just take the easy way out, setup traps at lamest places... disappointing.

on their benefit, can it be that people just behave and pay attention while around cops, you see it everyday on the hwy, 30 cars behind the one cop car because no one wants to break the speed limit and not a single car ahead. :-)

Ya they get paid too much for doing sweet dick all usually, but occasionally they come in handy.

Construction workers yelling and arguing with the public usually will just escalate into something ugly.

Also, after pointing out a crack head to one cop, he kept her away from "us" and endagering herself. Also told us she had hepititis and to stay away from her frothy ***! haha

So they do come in handy sometimes, mostly just for their visual presense.

Yes, they are actually required in a lot of areas when closing down a lane or more.
If you have ever worked on site with a pay duty cop you would see why they are needed.

I've always questioned this. A fully armed officer standing around a construction site. I guess they expect a lot of high risk takedowns while watching traffic go by. How much are they paid to stand around?

$65/hr is the rate for paid duty, in 30 minute increments, minimum 2 hours. While not generally paid by the taxpayers, that is what happens when they are there for city projects. True enough they appear to be doing nothing, and hopefully they end up doing nothing all day. However, at 2 construction sites across from my office on Front St, they are used to hold traffic while the crane brings down concrete buckets for refill. Clearly there is danger associated with that. The presence of a uniformed officer is more visible, and commands more attention and authority than the usual construction flag man, so they do serve a purpose to safety in many situations at the sites. I do wonder, however, if Auxiliary officers could also be used for this, for free? I know YRP has Aux doing traffic direction at times (such as events, or when a stoplight is out).

and yes they are pay duty not paid by tax payers, good for them for making some extra money on their time off but been paid overtime for going to court I don't agree with.

The OT for court time is a result of their contract. Toronto negotiated that court will never (if possible) fall on a working day. Therefore, all court time is overtime. YRP, as a contrast, negotiated that whenever possible, all court time will fall in conjunction with working days. This is probably because they only get 4 days off between shifts, rather than 5 or 6 like TPS.

I honestly don't get it.

Crime in Toronto has been going down over the last decade but they're still hiring more cops AND are about to open a new division in my area (Davenport/Old weston Rd).

A lot of people whining about them being paid too much to do nothing, why doesn't everyone just sign up ?.

alot of people would have taken different career paths 10-20 years ago if they knew the public sector jobs would get raises at this rate. Why go to University if not needed.

Police in Ontario are regarded as a revenue generation tool not a crime prevention and protection tool.

I pass them. Just not too quickly. Most don't seem to mind although one cop near London did have a problem with me passing him at about 120 when he was going 110. There was, of course, a giant pile of cars all tailgating each other behind him. I didn't get pulled over though. He just pulled up beside me (I was driving in the right lane while he was hogging the far left) and pointed at me and then pointed at his speedometer. So I slowed down to keep him happy until he got off at the next exit.

Maybe the fact that I was in a work vehicle labeled with a company name that most people think is run by the government helped me though.

I know that at Toronto Hydro, Police, Teachers etc get bumped up in pay every year tilll they max out and then it's the 3% cost of living raise they get every year.

So at the end of the careers, the raises compensate for the COL increases as our costs sure as hell do NOT increase by only 3%

No offense dude, but you NEED a new cop-shop in your hood!! :-)

It really depends. In general, the 3% has been the number but that number goes down to compensate for times like this when the real wage is decreasing for the private sector worker. Keep in mind, government wages don't increase like private sector wages do when times are good. It's more stable but not wealthier.

haha, same thing happened on my way home from quebec a few years ago, except for 110,120, more like 130 140. She was a cool cop!!!

Having put on a few thou in Chile, I'd often see their cop cars going a little under a limit with the cherries on to warn people to slow down. As long as you don't pass them at more than 10 over, you're fine. Typically they don't get passed, but then again, that country (along with most other countries) has more reasonable limits than in Ontario.

I've heard both extremes here. I've gone by OPP who are doing 100kmh in the right lane and they don't care. Then again, someone I know got a ticket for going 105kmh when they passed a cop doing 95kmh on the highway. I don't know what the logic is..if there is any..

Asking for consistency results in everyone getting screwed even more equally :(
