Stupidity is the problem with most of the sites. Many of the pictures I have seen have a large safe area but if you go down right at the edge, you can encounter obstacles. It would be interesting to see what criteria the paid safety evaluators used. It seems to be the potential to hit anything if you start from anywhere.
Ive taken my kids toboganning every winter. Enough that we upgraded to inflatable ones a few years ago and they've lasted so far.
Now some hills in my area i won't take my kids to middle of the day simply because it's overcrowded
but mainly, the reason i don't wanna take them there is because you have groups of adults standing in the middle of the freaking path waiting to be taken down like bowling pins. I mean they're not even paying attention. I've also seen the ambulance at that hill at least once a week during winter and i dont pass by there often.
I've seen kids/parents get to the bottom and get air off the lower cement blocks right onto asphalt... followed by awful screeching/crying
So i find other hills that are less busy and my kids still enjoy it for hours on end. And when my kid gets some air, nobody else is at risk. It's also a good lesson in risk assessment for the kiddos lol

Ah yes the classic let’s avoid common sense and ‘over police’ the community.
Of course just telling people not to do something will motivate them to do the very thing they probably would have avoided in the first place, just to make a point.
Taking your licks from dumb decisions is part of growing. When I was a kiddo I thought licking a frozen lamp post in -10 weather was a novel idea. About an hour of having my tongue stuck there, while my mother switched between laughing at me and berating me while I got it peeled off convinced me not all my ideas are great ones.

Erindale Park has 1 largish hill, and a LONG tiny hill....maybe an 8-10ft rise where the little kids go. I blame the parents in this area.
How stupid can you be to release a toddler on an uncontrollable sled 20ft away from a metal bbq installed by the city? I have seen little kids slam into that bbq stand multiple times. My kids never have, because I'm not an idiot and start them far away from any obstacles they may hit.
The bigger hill we'll go early on in the morning, because there are so many idiot parents that hang out at the bottom waiting for little Suzie and little Johnny. Idiots.
Back in my tobogganing days in Creemore in the mid 70's, saw the older teens trying out a windshield and vw bug hood, man the flew, had the wind knocked out of me a few times landing bad jumps....was all fun. Those days are missed.
We used to make our own Olympic slalom runs with GT Snowracers. Plenty of jumps and trees involved. Bonus points if you were able to knock the other guy off his sled. Brakes got in the way so we took those off. Many a time we pulled each other on them behind the ATV down the road.

Behind an ATV!? We used cars to tow us on sleds in the neighbourhood.
Lord knows someone would call the cops nowadays on that type of fun. My buddy still does it near his cottage with his kids…but that’s north of Algonquin so…
