TMP lap times?

I did my 1st trackday in Aug 2010 on a borrowed bike...a few days before my first race. I had never been around TMP and hadn't been near a track since FAST school in June 2000. I figured I better learn my way around before racing,LOL.

I tried to sign up for green group....until I was told no passing. F-that! Who doesn't want to pass other bikes on the track? I asked i I could go up to yellow. They asked if I was sure, since I openly admitted I had never done a trackday at TMP, or anywhere for that matter....but they allowed it. I Started at 1:27's and made a few 1:24's by day's end. I was asked twice throughout the day if I wanted to bump up to red group, but I declined, since I had no idea what I was doing.

i think Racer5 put's the 1:24 suggested time on bumping up to red group.

Lap times are a good indicator of improvement. I know some older guys that ride in red group just because of their experience level. Those who I am speaking about have raced, taught race schools, or have been doing track days for a long time. They are comfortable with passing. Sometimes the Yellow group can be a bit hectic with many ranges of skill/experience. Make the jump when you are ready. If it is making you nervous, bump down. Personally, I enjoy intermediate since I don't want to be in the way of the advanced group and it allows me to work on different things without slowing everybody up.

lap times don't tell the whole story- Steven Nickerson and Eden were doing in the teens on 125's (Eden at 11 yr's old), and if you were lucky enough to see Emerson Connor a few seasons back practicing at TMP when he was in the AMA RedBull Rookies Cup- it would shock you the corner speed of that kid.
