TMP lap times?

A it almost sounds cliche to say, "sorry if already posted" but...

Just curious to what average lap times are for different groups at TMP. Are there any general benchmark times for moving from beginner to intermediate, and again from intermediate to Hot Shoe? Of course actual lap times within groups will vary widely, just looking for some general reference points.

Not sure about the beginner-intermediate cut off.. but i'd say about 1:22 or faster would be fine for the advanced group.

It depends a bit on whether you prefer to be passed, or be the one doing the passing. I moved to intermediate when I was still running high 1:30's (like, 1:39 - 1:37), but that was mostly because I was frustrated with the really slow school that was on the track that day, and we weren't allowed to pass anywhere but on the two main straights. That kind of time will make you one of the slowest in intermediate, but you won't be an intolerable pylon either so it is okay if you don't mind being passed a lot. I am in the lower 1:30s now, and am still definitely not one of the faster riders in the group, but on the other hand I don't have more than a few bikes passing me in a session. Lots of guys in intermediate are running easily in the mid to high 1:20s.

Expert, I have no idea. Certainly low 1:20's would be fine in that group, but the fastest guys are even below 1:20 flat. Competition lap record is something like 1:13 if I remember correctly. I think in the expert group it might be more about the type of passing you are comfortable with, rather than the actual time. Will let one of the speedy guys comment...

I would have to agree with the above. I was timid to move into intermediate on my second day, did pretty good in beginner on my first day (mid to high 1:30s) and got bumped to intermediate on my second day where I ran my personal best 1:25. Was at Sunday's track day in intermediate and was a consistent high 1:20's which didn't appear to hold anyone up and quicker than a few other in that group.

I would say low 1:20s would be safe for moving up to the red group. As for lap record on TMP, there was a guy there in red who supposedly hit a 1:12. Looked like a factory set up Kawasaki pit with a main and spare bike, guess he runs pro something?? Teal can probably chime in with the name. Dude was quick though!

Edit- he didn't run 1:12 on sunday (may have) but my understanding was it was from a prior event which he hit it.

Kris Garvie? He might be in the 12s.

I would say it has a lot less to do with lap times, and more to do with consistency and comfort getting passed. It's not hard to tell when you're ready to bump from novice to intermediate, and at that stage you really shouldn't be thinking about lap times, you should be riding around at 75% working on the weak aspects of your riding as you dont learn anything riding at 90% (one of these days i might even listen to that advice). You'll know when you're ready to bump to intermediate.

Personally i'm running 1:23-1:25's around tmp and run in advanced unless i'm going slow intentionally to work on something, then i might bump down into intermediate. The main reason for me running in advanced (because i could be in either group really) is that i just really dont like the idea i might be startling people in intermediate as i come past. The most important thing about advanced is that you be consistent with your line and ride more or less on the race line. Guys will pass you close enough they can reach out and touch you, so for everyones safety you cant be swinging wildly all over the track, way off the race line as people often tend to do in intermediate.

Hope that helps.

A couple of Thursday ago there was only two groups.

Green and Red/Yellow combined.

A lot of the grouping on the particular day depends on the event turnout.

The only comment i have is to be honest with yourself, don't sign up for Red just because YOU believe it's safer. Perhaps it might be for you, but you may be a standing pylon for other riders in the red group.

Amzy was at TMP this past Sunday and so was Kamp, but I don't think that anyone was running 12's or 13's, more like 16+.

I tend to agree with FriendlyFoe in that there's more important things than lap times alone.

I'm retarded. For some reason I still think of Amzy riding his GSXR.

Thanks for the responses. I've done two trackdays and am generally in the high 1:30s. I'm in no rush to move out of beginner. I'm trying to find consistent brake markers, turn in points, body positioning etc... On Saturday our group of 2 was combined with the intermediates, some of those guys were pretty quick. It was interesting to see how they can snap the bike over so quickly for their turn entry and get on the gas early on exit. I'm trying to stay smooth and consistent, like everyone, I also want to improve and become faster!

I can't think of his name off the top of my head, but I met him at the Alpinestars booth at the Indy MotoGp last summer. He is a young kid, like 16-18, skinny, and he has (had, saw them for sale) 2 red Prostar built CBR600RR's... Sound familiar anyone?? He was the first to do a 1:12 if I recall correctly. He is from Perry Sound too I believe... name is escaping me.

I agree, best thing to do is be honest and don't be in a rush to move up groups until you're good and ready. I am only doing 1:25's with a best of 1:23, I run in intermediate still as i'm still not fully ready to move to expert. I believe anything 1:20 and below you should be in expert if there's too much traffic in inter.

I do 1:24 - 1:26 at TMP ... but my race bike moves backwards on straightaways. I prefer being in the advanced group but I often end up in intermediate because the only reason I ever go to track days is to ride with non-race-licensed friends who want to go. It's OK either way.
