Tis the season of layoffs

COVID caused a rush of online hiring to keep up with the demand that was overshadowing capacity.

Vaccines, economy showing cracks, and COVID being ‘over’ and now that demand dropped off the cliff and tech is the first victim.

Personally I expect the layoffs to start from other industries as things start slowing down. Job numbers are STILL strong technically, but I don’t know if that’s reality or just fudging numbers to not show the real picture (full time jobs lost vs part time jobs gained) as govt has played fast and loose with numbers to make things more rosy (or worse) than they really are.

I remember when musk was laying off twitter employees and the world seem to stand still. Now these other big tech companies are doing the same and ok well it's just another day

It’s cause Elon is a big deal and made it very loud and clear he’s going to do it.

This is different because there’s no fanfare or announcements….’here you go, thanks for your service not GTFO’.

Like being in a sales meeting and telling the admin team they are revenue neutral, they contribute but we don’t know how to measure it.

Then listening to the marketing guys , if the plan works , it was all solid marketing, if the plan fumbles it was poor implementation by the sales team.

No longer being in an ownership role of any business , I can just laugh along with the rest of the schmoes

At one of our sales conferences we took a few hours off for some recreational sports, management vs working staff. Management outnumbered the working staff.

I call admin teams (finance, inventory) and manufacturing cost centers, and sales & marketing revenue centers.

When marketing or sales hears themselves referred to as cost centers, there is a lot of silence in the room.

Reminds me of a meeting with a previous employer. All department heads, GMs and a few inventory people. GM yelling at everyone in the room “you don’t make us money, you cost us money. If your job title doesn’t say Work Centre Operator I want to see cost savings ideas every quarter or find a new job”.
