Tires, warmers and a cold track

I've only bought scrubs this year, but if you can find a good deal like I did ($100/$120 a set with 40 laps on each - one medium the other soft), it isn't a bad idea to buy used. Even with some tire slide, it isn't unpredictable after the first or second time and still maintains grip.

The front tires last FOR-E-VER so I wouldn't mind buying a new rear now and then in between swapping the fronts. With the performance and longevity of slicks, I can't see myself going back to DOTs. DOTs are reasonably useless in the rain, so I just use full slicks or full rain tires.... and the rains haven't seen a lap this year *knock on wood*

Only downfall for me is I need a new set of warmers... my current ones fit on the slicks but it's really tight :p.

Woodcraft warmers will fit on the 200 rear just fine! And will work with your EU1000.

Hi all - reviving this thread because there has been progress (at least in my thinking).

I have been flopping back and forth in my head between doing next season on DOT race tires (with warmers = $$) or just replacing the Superbike Pros with another set, or going back to street / track tires (even though the bike is track-only).

Posts here by omnivore and Shaman, along with a conversation with Sean Huffman at the Toronto Motorcycle Show this weekend, convinced me that my Pirellis are just shot even though they have some depth left. Everyone described exactly what I experienced - the tires just progressively providing less and less grip, even though they don't look to be that worn.

So, DOTs or street / track combo tires? Tough choice. Talking with Sean, it seems like I can probably get all the performance I need, at my current skill level, out of some Q2s. And anyway, they're cheap, so if I find out part way through the season that I need / want more, I can always just chuck them and go the whole hi-$ DOT / warmers / generator route. But I'm betting that can wait until next season. 1:25s at TMP should be easily doable on Q2s if I manage to progress that much this coming year.

I'm done with the Superbike Pros because a) I can't safely run at all if the track is even a little damp, and b) they are slippery as snot when brand new and I don't care to break in another set.

Cheers and thanks.

I could run 1:25s at TMP on touring tires no sweat.....if that's your current pace you won't need warmers or DOT's.
If you like the Pirelli SUperbike Pros, it is my opnion that they are the best bang for your buck, laps per dollar tire you can put on your track bike. They offer what I feel is 90% of the grip of full on race tires.....and last and last and last. And when they do go away, it is usually a controllable slide. They are awesome for endurance racing as well.

I was doing 1:25 at TMP on front S20 and rear Q2 at the end of last season when I put them. I'm switching to slicks with warmers for next season. PM me if you want my S20/Q2 combo (only 2 track days done on them), will make you a sweet deal you can't refuse :)

i once did a 1:20 on a set of BT016 at tmp. it was hairy though. it was nice though I did like three track days on them after using them on the street for half a season.

Probably wouldn't be ideal since I am on a 180 rear. But I am curious - why did you end up running the two different brands?

People run the 190/55 on 600 as well and some say they love it, although I'm not sure how good that is though.

The two different brands was not really intentional. I had a BT-016 on the front for some time, then I changed just the rear to a new BT-016 PRO (190/50/17). Then some time after that I decided that the front is too wasted and I can't go on the track like that, so I bought a new front S20, which was the new improved version of BT-016 PRO. Hold and behold, I got the tire, but then I decided that I want to go on the taller profile (190/55/17), although the rear BT-016 PRO was almost new (I still have it). I'm seriously not sure why I chose to buy a Q2 (from Pete's), he had S20 in stock too I think, or was it that he didn't have the 190/55, I can't remember. But, that's how I ended up ordering a rear Q2.
