Tires tires Tires - what tires are best for touring?

Pr2's have been the best tire I have owned. I consistently got about 15k out of each set of hard riding on a heavy 1+L bike and 2up. Also they stick like glue to the point I was scraping fairings at the Gap.
Currently have about 6k on my Pr3's and will not be buying another pair of these but will be returning to the Pr2's.
The Pr3's just feel slimier to me and not confidence inspiring at all. Also they are starting to were funny and have been cupping from the first 800kms.
My advice PR2's all the way.

I'm wearing these now:

5,000km now. I've ridden the cabot trail on them pretty hard, there was no slippage at all.

I compare the carcass w/ that of a Pilot power and the carcass is so much stiffer.
It also has the endurance record.
For a pirelli its really cheap too

I think i'm going to try the shinko 009's I loved the shinko's i had on the maxim and they seem to be far less expensive than premium brand tires. I do a lot of traveling on the 401 and there's not many turns on that either...

where in the prairies are you?

Ted at Rosey Toes will install a set of Shinko 009's on your bike (full installation) for $300. I'm on my second set and I'm happy with them. My last rear tire lasted me 14,000 km. I experimented on my last installation by putting a softer shinko on my front and although it sticks like crazy and has improved the front end feel, it has disappointed me by cupping badly with only 7000 km. Needless to say, I won't be trying this experiment any more.

Those the Angel's?
Was looking at those, have you had the PR2's on the bike before to give a comparison?

I've never tried Michelins, I have one in my basement now. If u put them side by side and knock them around on the ground, u can tell the difference. The Pirellis have a much stiffer carcass. I am not sure but I think the Pirellis have a layer of steel and 2 rayons, I think the Michelins do not have a steel layer.

Pirellis also have a much curved profile, the Michelins, like Bridgestone and Dunlop have a wider flater profile. This enables easier lean in.
They are also less expensive than PR3.

I've averaged 17,000 on my last three sets of Metzler M3's, around 14000 on Shinko 009's, and less than 10,000 on both sets of Dunlops (can't remember the models), next I'm putting on a set of Metzler Z8's as soon as Pete delivers them.

does the angel actually change to a devil or whatever after 650miles?

This choice is too hard to make and I need to make my choice asap.

I think im going with PR2's - proven time and time again to be a good all round tire. 350ish shipped from petes.

PR2 hands down still the best tire for the money. 11000km on mine and just about half woren. I fully expect 20,000km out of them. Excellent in the rain, and super sticky in the twisties. I'm getting them again for this bike.

The angel disappear and only the devil is apparent

I never used to justify paying alot for tires, but after trying Pirellis I think I might want to try a premium model

I got 20k on a set of Conti Road Attacks (the originals, not sure about the newer 2's) and I liked them a lot. They did square off after a while but they are known to do that. Got about 8k on a set of PR2's now and they have been great as well. I'd recommend either of them.

Another +1 for PR2s. I ride a lot in the wet (not intentionally...it's just what seems to happen to me)...and they are great. Also very good dry too. Lots of confidence in curves and they wear well. I also do a lot of 4xx riding and I have no flat spots after around about 6k or so I think on these so far.

My R1200R came with the original Pilot Road tires and I got 20,000km out of them. Various riding in Ontario, New York, Vermont, PA etc... I just put the PR2 on this year and I am expecting that I will get about the same from them based on what other R1200R riders have experienced. I think part of your issue with the wear on the PR3 was the long stretches of flat road. Any tire will start to square off if you mainly ride straight roads. But as others have said air pressure may also have been a factor. Especially depending on how much stuff you may have had on the back of the bike for the trip

My PR3's are holding up respectably.

7k on them and still like new with no squaring off.
I was unsure of them at first but after a recent trip to Quebec of mixed slab, twisties and full days rain I couldn't be happier with them

So no going back to PR2's then?

I've been on a set of PR3s for the past couple of months. They seem to be wearing pretty well but I don't think I'll get 10K out of them. Riding pretty hard with a heavy bike and loaded Givis through the twisties eats tires pretty quickly. The one thing that I love about the PR3s is the performance in the rain. Although the weather this summer has been amazing, every time I go on a trip I get caught in torrential rain. The PR3s are confidence inspiring.

My second set of PR2's are past the wear bars. Excellent tire. Both sets have lasted a bit past 20k km. Great grip in all conditions, no surprises, they just work great.

Was going to get a set of PR3's, but now I'm not so sure.

Instrumented testing has shown that the PR3s run hotter than PR2s, 023s and the Avons during dry track testing. As a result, they WILL wear out quicker then the others, esp if you have a heavier bike, carry luggage, and/or a pillion.

So if you're looking for a longer lasting tires, unless you value a cutting edge rain tire, then PR2's or the other good ST tires would be a better bet.
