Tipped over someone's GSXR-1000, need advice

Hey Guys,

I had an unfortunate incident where I tipped over someone's bike. The guy parked his bike really close to the back of my car and I did not see it in any of my mirrors.
The bike, as the topic states is a 2007 GSX-R1000.

The collision was very slow, I was backing out at like 1km/h, but the I touched the right side of the bike, lifted it over it's stand, and tipped it on the left side.

The guy is now saying that he wants $2,000 from me.

The picture of the exhaust shows that the left side exhaust is bent close to the wheel now.

In addition, the guy is claiming that after the fall, the bike wont start properly, and the ignition sometimes does not work. He added RH handle switch to the quote.
It's worth to note that he says I can either fix all the damage he's pointing out which will be $1900 + labour (which he's insisting to be done at this Brampton place) or give him $2000. I get the feeling he wants to pocket some of the money.

Am I being taken for a ride here?

You backed into his bike now man up and pay up.

Im sure he can replace some of the parts himself and save some coin. I don't see how this changes anything on your part...

With this being your first post and joining in august of this month im assuming you dont own a bike and don't know a whole lot about them. With that said one of those plastics can easily be 500-700 $ alone...
 
First - good for you for trying to make things right. You made an expensive mistake. Always a good idea to check around your vehicle before getting in.

Second - $2k for a tip over is getting away fairly cheap. My bike would have cost you considerably more.

Compare to a minor crumple to the front of a car. After parts, paint and labour you're probably looking at more than $2k.

Paying up will still probably be cheaper in the long run than going through insurance, which is entirely the prerogartive of the wronged party - the rider.
 
Honestly i think that's MORE than reasonable. Think if someone grinded lightly across the side of your car...wouldnt you want the person to pay for the damages so your car is back to the way it was? Just because you gave it a love tap doesn't mean it cant take significant damage
 
first of all, good for you for staying in touch with the guy and trying to do the right thing.

to check on his figures ask him for a complete parts list (looks like he supplied this) and start calling around, see if you can fix the thing cheaper yourself. 2k seems a bit steep for a tip over but as others have pointed out plastics aren't cheap
 
Good for u to step up and pay. But getting all the old parts that he replaces back off him and the. Sell them go get come of your money back. FYI my front nose for my cbr is $900
 
Well since you were honest about things I will offer you some tips.
1. Ask for all of the old parts back. All of it, resell it here/Craigs List/Kijiji/Ebay to recover some of your costs. Those old parts belong to you now once you pay for it.

2. Go on Ebay and look for the OEM plastics, you can get them cheap. Do not buy from a dealership.
You might be able to find them locally from racers as well, check cherrypicker.com

3. Post a closer shot of the estimate bill. I would like to see the prices you got quoted or type it in

4. Why is there rust on the bar ends for something that just happened?

5. You can get bar ends and stock levers shipped via ebay for probably less than $50 probably $25.

You do not have to replace with brand new items because the bike is used and has a depreciated value.
You have to put it back in the state it was in before you hit it meaning used parts that are clean/newish looking can do the job.
Find out what that bike sells for, look online to get ideas.

Contact Dave at Competition Cycle on this forum, he likely has all the parts you need and can do the install as well.

Did he park the bike directly behind you in your parking spot?
He might have some fault in this depending on where he parked and the spot your car was in e.g. if private parking spot and he placed the bike within your lines then he might have some fault as well (just speculation).

From what I see he should be able to replace the items himself in about 2 hours.
Tell him and write it up that you pay him $1500 and call it a day.

That bike can be fixed back for $500 from the pics you posted and info you have provided thus far.

Brampton Powersport is a legit authroized Suzuki motorcycle dealers, their cost estimate should be fair..... at least they didn't get the estimate from Suzuki Newmarket :D

honestly, I think you are getting a bargain for $2k.
 
Good on you for stepping up. Bottom line is you did the crime now pay up. If you think you are being taken advantage of just go thru insurance, if not then you have no choice but to fork out the cash.
 
Like others said: you really are getting a break with a $2K pay out. Certainly doesn't seem like it. What appears to logically look like a $25 part, is often $350 - $600, and if every part including his L/S exhaust is scuffed / cracked they ALL need to be replaced. Often, one, two, three or four pieces look like one. I'd be rushing that $2K to the owner incase he changes his mind. Ditto on retaining the broken pieces - however I have a sneaky suspicion they won't be in nearly as good condition as they are now (after they butcher them off, and throw them in the parking lot at lunch like a Frisbee).
 
Seems reasonable. Doesn't really matter if he's going to pocket the money, you damaged it pay up. Whether or not he fixes it with the money is his business and irrelevant to the situation. If it was my bike you'd prob pay more. If you were to buy ebay plastic sure it'll be cheaper, but he would want to replace that with OEM stuff obviously. Going through the dealer I'd assume will cost you more than 2k maybe.

I think you can only go through this approach if it was your buddy who knock over your bike.

If he claim insurance, it would be dealer repaired with all brand new geniune OEM parts. If the cost of repair is higher than market value of the bike, the insurance company will just cut him a cheque.

To be fair to the rider, at a minimum, the repair should ALL be done with brand new parts and NOT from parts off another wrecked bike off eBay.
 
You could always go through your insurance, though it'll probably cost you at least as much in increased premiums over time (unless you have first accident forgiveness or something).

To clarify on some comments:

The estimate I posted can be zoomed in by clicking on the picture. The price quoted there is simply the total of all the parts that he listed. Labour not included.
If this was my bike, I'd want the other guy to fix everything, but what baffles me is that he

a) listed parts that were not damaged (the 1st item) (RH Switch) and one of the plastics
b) wants $2k when the new parts alone cost $1,900
c) claims I broke one of his sliders (can a bike with sliders get so damaged from tipping over?) and wants 2 new ones

Keeping the parts is only an option if I buy all new parts and install them at that place (he's insisting on that shop).
I want to cover his damages, but minimize mine as well.

$2K in damage, i'd be going through my insurance.
