Thoughts on The Misfit by Cleveland Cyclewerks

It's chinese made garbage! This stuff looks good from far away but up close is only one tiny step up the ladder from an ebike.

If I was your friend and you rode up to me on one of those I would literally cock punch you...just to teach you a valuable life lesson.

If you want a cafe racer, get a good old school platform and build one.
That's how these bikes are created, not bought with cheap tinfoil crap holding them together.

Honestly, if the chinese thought they could sell us cardboard cutouts that merely look like motorcycles an get away with it they would.

Made in China.

Don't fall into this, this used to be the argument made against Japan, and look at the status its achieved now in many industries. Being made in China doesn't immediately mean something is low quality anymore. That's not to say that these bikes aren't potentially low quality though, it's all up to whoever is having it manufactured.

Do a little research, Scott Colisimo tried to have these bikes made in America, but after years of trying found it to be impossible. So he oversaw Chinese production, and is using the profit leverage to build a factory in Cleveland. I know you are skeptical but it's unfair to just spout garbage about a product you aren't familiar with. Everyone that has bought one of these LOVES them..

The stigma of poor Japanese quality was simply political. There never was a factual basis for this, and owners quickly realized, and spread the word, that Japanese quality was immediately superior to North American, or especially British competition. Harley even got the American government to levy such huge tariffs on Japanese bikes over 701cc that they thought they could force them out of the country, or at least make them undesirably expensive to purchase. The Chinese unilaterally refuse to obey any internationally recognized manufacturing qualifications, because the cost to conform would make them less competitive. Chinese doesn't automatically mean garbage, but it's pretty close.

Yeah, comparing Chinese to Japanese manufactured goods does not add up. Japanese products are for the most part excellent to very good while the Chinese stuff varies from very good to utter crap.

I do like that hardtail bobber chassis but not the motor. I'd buy it for the registered frame and replace the Lifan with a CB350 engine.

I actually LOL'd in my office.... true words.

I wish people would be more open minded. Chinese does not equal crap, in fact all of us are surrounded by high quality chinese consumer goods - stuff we are willing to pay for obviously because we fill our lives with it. Look around you, check the labels. 99% of the things you own were probably made in HK or mainland China.

Every major automobile and motorcycle manufacturer sources parts from China. Do you think that Honda would contract the manufacturers to make "cheap tinfoil crap" if it meant their product would become inferior? Absolutely not.

The fact of the matter is, no matter where you go in the world, be it Canada, the US, the UK, India, Russia, Japan, or EVEN (omg) CHINA, you can find both utter garbage products and ultra high quality goods. It depends entirely on who is manufacturing it, to what specifications, and what goals they seek to achieve.

If you're making dollar store crap, you're not going to put a lot of effort into it. If it's high end consumer electronics, it probably has a bit more R&D involved.
I know that there are terrible, in fact downright awful products coming out of China. But please compare apples to apples, this is not a Konker or a Qlink product.

Not asking anyone to grab a horn and start touting CCW as the best thing since sliced bread. But please be fair to Scott, it's not cool to just call his product garbage when you haven't any experience with it.

If I am wrong and it turns out to be crap, well so be it. But at least I come to the table with an open mind.

its got SS braided brake lines and dual pistons...overkill on this POS if you ask me

In all fairness, can anyone actually point out to a recent, negative review on Lifan engines? I've run a few casual search on some search engines and can't find anything really that would support this skewed view (just curious here).

The Lifan motor is probably the best quality part of the bike. They pop out millions of those. They also make big bore and performance kits for the small Honda motors.

Thanks Retro, that's what I was finding through my searches - was just curious what the backlash was about on these bikes was (not my cup of tea, but I can see them as an attractive alternative to those folks who don't want to ride the usual full fairing 125 or 250).

Blinders on? I think you are the one with blinders on.
Most of these, like Hyosung, are going to be piled up in the junkyard in a few years.

I laughed through half that video...those morons doing "burnouts" on dirt.
He keeps pressing the "Cleveland" button but the only thing from Cleveland is him.

Also, I'm sure glad they have manuals on such impossibly complicated technology as "how to adjust your valves", lmao.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the customer they are going after won't be the most mechanically inclined.
(If they understood mechanics and quality they wouldn't touch these with a ten foot pole.)

I kind of warmed up to company after watching the vid. Sure, they are made in China and motor is Lifan or whatever - but u gotta start with something. Suzuki started with weaving machines :). And good for them if they succeed and good for us if they do - more bikes to choose from. In all honesty - guy has some balls to start bike company.
Did not see the bike in person and did not ride it so can't comment on that.

I say good for the CCW guy. He's not bitching, he's doing. He's competing against decades worth of quality used bikes and the latest offerings from the usual (well-funded) suspects. That's got to take some guts at least. I like the minimalist style, even if it's a bit derivative--no worse than all those "modern" cafe racers. Still nicer than the plastic blobs I had to choose from when I was starting out.

The evasiveness about the motor's origin is understandable. Trade between China and America is a political hot potato down there. Why even touch it? Erik Buell caught similar flack, but for using a Sportster motor instead of something Japanese or German.

EDIT: Stop reading my mind, Mongol.

No, you STOP :D I swear - I was about to type Buell's example too!

I just got my M1 and was looking for beginner bikes when I came accross The Misfit by Cleveland Cyclewerks. Apparently Motoretta on college will be selling them this season. Its a 250cc retro-style (cafe racer) custom for a MRSP of $3,125. The price looks good to me for a new 250 and the styling is a bonus so I'm giving this some serious thought. But I know absolutely nothing about this bike.

Does anyone know about The Misfit or Cleveland Cyclewerks? I'm afraid that this might be a bike thats all look and no go. I need something that I'll eventually be able to take on the highway for 1 hour trips. Is it a good idea to get a bike like this for starting out or should I be sticking to the Ninja 250s?
