Thoughts on 2009 BMW G650X?

The X does everything I want and it does it reliably.

I can’t put my finger on it but something is missing…excitement…a bit more character is what’s not there.

It’s a tool is the easiest way I can describe it. I like it, enjoy it…but something is just missing and I can’t describe it.
Try the 796 out sometime if you are in the area you could try the 1190 as well but be warned it is addicting

Sent using a thumb maybe 2

problem with adventure bikes is that they're expensive, a cool KTM or triumph, even used will likely be twice the price of a used honda, if not more

The CB500X is a lot like the VStrom 650 that I've owned for 15+ years now. Some days I wonder why I still own it. I've got other bikes in the stable like an XSR900 that are a lot more interesting and which are instantly thrilling to ride. In comparison, the VStrom really starts to shine after I've been in the saddle for an hour or more. The somewhat bland character doesn't grab your attention but you eventually notice that, unlike riding the more exciting bikes: your butt doesn't hurt, the tank is so big you won't have to think about finding a gas station for another two hours, the vibes are nice and mellow, you aren't watching out for cops behind every hedge, etc...

If you only do short rides then a characterful bike can be a good choice. But if you can swing it, a bland bike and a characterful bike compliment each other pretty well.

The VStrom is like the wife: the paint is a bit faded since you first met, weighs a bit too much, doesn't move very fast, but is very comfortable and easy to live with.

A characterful bike is like the mistress: fun, exciting, a little bit dangerous, but more expensive and maybe an hour is really all you want to spend with her. Might have an accent or a temper if she's one of those European models.

Thanks guys appreciate the input. Maybe I’m just bored of it. Will have to look at some mistress models.

the KTMs def have anger issues

But you know what they say about crazy chicks

This is the reason for the thread. To see if anyone can give insight…from the comments so far this is a no go.
I’d say don’t.

Old bikes are for bike tinkerers, old BMWs for rich bike tinkerers. That oil leak didn’t fix itself, it’s just hiding till someone decides to open the can of worms.

Your buddy may have not experienced all the gremlins this bike has to offer - there are a bunch. Expect coolant leaks and to replace your water pump and clutch cover soon. Same goes for the internal decompression lever, the Chinese engines pre 2012 have metallurgical issues that can make hot starts impossible - the fix fir both is buying and installing redesigned BMW parts. These are not if issues, they will happen under 30k miles.

Electrical issues are also common, particularly corroded or melted connectors inside the gas tank and at the ignition key lock, and dash display.

Another really good example of nice feature engineering and poor dependability engineering.

It depends on the bike. The caponord was super comfy. I've done over 10K km in a week on it and would have kept going but there was snow and it was terrifying in the snow.

This is exactly my feeling about the DL650 Vstrom. I ended up with one by accident, it’s been like a Stepford wife.

Yah ...thrills is not what the 500x delivers ....let alone my CB300F but it's very nice at the fuel pump with 450 km range.
That's why I hope still to be riding when Honda releases the CB EV based on the 300 chassis. Thrill is back even if the range is not.
A Vstrom 650 can be lots of fun in the twists if you stir it up into the 7-9k RPM and no luggage but you are not the right inseam.
9 year old BMW for $7k - surely he jests.

You want to set your sights on a low seat S1000XR

Seat height okay and lots of go fast ...no so much for touring.

Certified with GP Bikes powertrain warranty for 2 months or 3,000 km whichever comes first. ONLY 417 km

You won't lack for thrills. Twice your 500x HP ..not much more weight.

This could be fun….

LOVE LOVE LOVE the 650....but that would be Honda #6 in a row...maybe time to mix it up?

variety is the spice of life

Never ridden that particular one, but as someone who's owned small displacement inline 4's before, you can do a lot better if you're looking for thrills and character imo

If you go 650 - will it be a 2 or 4 cylinder?
2 is only nice if you decide to keep it in the city..

I'm around 200lbs...I feel like the 2 cylinder 650 gases out easy on the highway.
At times it makes me wish I had gone for a 4 cylinder 650 for that extra ~20 hp..

I think the only Honda I’d go to next is the VFR800…but IIRC it’s soulless as well.

you're on a strom correct?
Never heard of them gassing out on highways before

No Sir...the Z650

When testing on private roads in Mexico I find that at speeds above ((90x2) -20)+ km/hr I dont have anymore 'go'
I had spoken to Speedlabs about this and it simply came down to power/weight(me) ratio after a certain speed : /
