Those with Media Players ... step inside

Just for future reference.. I'm rockin' a little Acer Aspire REVO 3610 nettop (like a netbook without a keyboard/screen, book-sized, almost no power drain) hooked up to the TV. It's running regular Ubuntu Linux (that means no Netflix as it doesn't do Microsoft Silverlight but it will play any media you throw at it) with XBMC on top. Works well with an el-cheapo MCE remote or you can use your Android/Steve Jobs phone instead. My main source of media for this puppy is the NAS rockin' 2x1.5TB drives in Raid-1 (the entire setup is a bit over a year and a half old.

No one else just hardwired their comp to their tv?

S**t is so cash. Boost everything to 150%, keep it at 1080p. Seriously though, buy a cheap used comp that can handle it, and use it as a media center.

Didn't Firestart just describe just that?

PS: I'm running similar.

interesting.

Then I'd go with a laptop or small computer with HDMI output.

That's what I've got, plus a Bluetooth keyboard to act as a remote. I don't worry about formats, because there will pretty much always be a codec I can download.

Which one are you using ? Im currently stepped into a cheap Apple tv, and now looking at my buddies WD Live i want to switch.

I have looked at the boxee box but for $200 , they can keep it.

I m looking for something that can play any format, from an external HDD attached to it. Not really worried about wifi that much ..

Any suggestions ? The two im looking at are 1. WD Live and the PB Box office

I had the ASUS o play hdp-r1, before I smashed the remote. The warranty was is amazing with ASUS; I sent in the broken remote with the media player to ASUS and they sent me back an upgrade of the ASUS o play hdp-r3.
I also have the IOMEGA Screenplay Director Media player. The bonus of the IOMEGA unit is that it comes with a built in Hard drive of 1TB or 2TB capacity.

Something like that but closer to Chaos/Rob's interpretation. An old comp can run 10x as much juice as a new nettop. It would take about 3 days for me to run up 10c of juice with the Revo
