Which one are you using ? Im currently stepped into a cheap Apple tv, and now looking at my buddies WD Live i want to switch.

I have looked at the boxee box but for $200 , they can keep it.

I m looking for something that can play any format, from an external HDD attached to it. Not really worried about wifi that much ..

Any suggestions ? The two im looking at are 1. WD Live and the PB Box office

Stay far away from the boxee. Heard nothing but bad things about it.

If you already have an Apple TV you could mod it with XBMC and it will play pretty much any format you can think of. It still retains all the original Apple TV functionality but adds an additional XBMC Menu. The only drawback is you can't connect your HD to it, only streaming.

Thanks for the info on Boxee. As for the apple tv, not so much interested in streaming as i am playing off my external HDD.

How much are you willing to spend? You can get a laptop with an HDMI output that will basically do everything you'd need.

Alternatively, have a look at the Playstation 3.

what??? heresy!

once you own an apple product, no other product can compare. how dare you imply anything else might be better. . .

you must be doing something wrong or are not cool enough to understand its greatness!

I have a wd box, not the live, I got from Factory Direct for $59. It played everything so far except a MOV file from an old camera. Divx, AC3, avi, VOB's you name it. I love it. I was looking at Tiger Direct at an Iomega Media box as an upgrade. Factory Direct is selling the live for $79... I'd love to hook it up to my pc (Cat5) and external drive (usb) to play everything I own on any computer. I'd like to find one that has a built in web browser for added media access. PS3 may be the answer...

Thanks .. the WD live i was looking at is the First Gen, but it wont access a hard driver bigger than 2 TB.

So id have to look at the newer generations since my one drive is 3 tb in size with movies on it.

I already have a PS3, and it wont allow you to open up files greater than 4 Gig.

get a large USB hard drive formatted with NFTS. all set.

thats what i used to do.

now i have a seagate goflex home as a network storage. i keep all my movies on there and the ps3 recognizes it in the video section on the xmb

lol,
i have a boxee for sale if interested,
its not that bad.. :)
oh.. and it looks cool, and has a cool remote.

ARe u gonna put that in the Toyhauler?

I still prefer a laptop connected to an HDTV, but I also have an HDTV and think it's one of the best (if not the best) stand alone media player around. It plays anything I throw at it, and supports fast forward/rewind (this is very important - the rewind/FF must work well!) and remembers where you stopped watching a video and let's you resume.

I tried 3 different units before WDTV (Patriot was one - sorry, can't recall the names of the others, this was a couple years ago) and every single one had problems either playing a movie, fast forwarding, or rewinding. The WDTV was definitely the best at these (although there still have been a couple movies I downloaded that obviously had bad encoding that wouldn't let me FF/RW).

I recently purchased the "live" version for my parent's who are computer n00bs so they could watch netflix - they have been using it for the past 2 months and I haven't had to help them once - that says something for how user friendly it is ;) I throw movies onto the drive whenever I'm home, but they still prefer netflix.

Yeah over the weekend i went out and got a WD Live .. i havent hooked it up yet, but looks straight forward. And the userface looks simple.

I have both a WD Live Plus (same as WD Live but with Netflix) and an ASRock 330 running XBMC. I'm a big fan of XBMC, but I must say the simplicity and versatility of the WD TV Live really impressed me.

A bit late to the party, but I have an Asus OPlay. I have it connected to a 2 TB hard drive, and it plays Blu-ray (MKV) files as well.
