Yup. Factory farming. The more I learned, the more I was disgusted. But because they're not cute little puppies, no one gives a ****.
 
At least those puppies were abandoned in an area where they would be found quite quickly , not starved in a barn or tossed in a river . And now they will get rehomed with non turds .
There is a good side to this .

Maybe. It has a ''he's going to live on a farm'' vibe to it. X-breeds don't have a good shelf life in shelters.
 
Interesting coincidence, my daughter the activist just posted on FB about the shelters all over Canada bursting with dogs , “breeders” are handing over litters and parents as the let’s buy a dog boom is over . Euthanasia is becoming too common. There are support groups that can help with food costs and vet support if you really can’t cover the bills . Fall out from Covid dog frenzy is heartbreaking . My daughter quit being a vet tech as daily dog put downs “ because we just don’t have time” was emotionally crushing .

There's a reason the suicide rates among veterinarians is insanely high. Spend years getting into a profession because you love animals so much, then end up spending a good chunk of your career killing said animals, seeing them be mistreated, and having to break bad news over and over again to families. Plus, everyone bitches about how much the bills are and are convinced you're ripping them off (especially Canadians who are mostly insulated from the true cost of health care).

Not an easy way to make a living...
 
We (had) 2 cats one dog . Down to 1 and 1 . In January cat two was unwell , organs shut down and gone in 5 days , but we spent 3k on tests and efforts before she had to go. Last year the dog collected a bacterial internal that lead to blood in stool and very sick dog , 3 days in hospital on intravenous antibiotics. 6k in a week, we saved the dog . Her predecessor had three ACL surgeries at 3k each, was on 2 meds for allergies, and died of a heart issue at 7. Large breed Lab.
While being a vet is a very lucrative job, I can see how the gloom could catch up. My kid got so angry with people putting down pets because ‘ we are moving’ or just ‘too busy’ . Another downside to transient cities like Ft McMurray

I know someone who returned an adopted dog as it barked. It’s a ******* dog of course it barks. Didn’t speak to them after that.

When we adopted our two dogs we found the male had severe hip-displasia at only 10 weeks old. It was so bad the vets were sharing the x rays because his femural head wasn’t in his hip bone socket. We were told the prognosis wasn’t fantastic for him but one vet friend said “treat the dog not the condition, he might adapt”. He did adapt. Walks like a drunken sailor but has a very happy life and is as strong as an ox. At no time did we ever consider taking him back. They aren’t TVs or mass produced electronics.

I hate quite a few people but reserve my intense dislike for people that mistreat animals.

Too many people go for the looks of a little puppy because they are so lovable with their big clumsy feet. They grow into their feet and just get clumsier. Some dogs are bred to bark. They are alarm dogs not guard dogs.

Hunting dogs communicate by barking. If there isn't another dog around they just keep trying harder.

Dogs are typically work animals and need to fulfill their breed instincts.

Bad news: A kid was mauled to death in Edmonton a couple of days ago. The dogs were apparently Cane Corsos

Supposedly an OK breed.

The Cane Corso is an Italian breed of mastiff. It is usually kept as a companion dog or guard dog; it may also be used to protect livestock. In the past it was used for hunting large game, and also to herd cattle. Wikipedia
Temperament: Stable, Intelligent, Even Tempered, Alert, Reserved, Loyal, Fearless, Trainable, Calm, Quiet
Life span: 10 – 12 years
Weight: Female: 40–45 kg, Male: 45–50 kg

Of course a lot depends on how they were bred, raised and kept.

It can be, but a family friend is a vet, and according to her, you only make decent money once you've opened your own practice. And even then, it's on average a good bit less than equivalent professions with the same competitiveness and years of schooling (dentist, lawyer, etc.), I'd say. Bills are high but operating costs are also high.

We adopted a rescue in BC who sat funny and hitched her leg sometimes when she ran. A couple x-rays later, and it turned out she had a poorly healed leg break, likely from being hit by a car. Fixing it wasn't really an option, so they suggested a femoral head ostectomy, which essentially involves cutting the ball off the femur that would normally socket into the hip, and relying on tendon growth to support the leg. Took a couple months after surgery for her to heal, but after that, you'd never know she didn't have a normal leg. Granted, she was a short-legged pitbull mix (if you look up doxi-bulls or dachshund-pit bull mixes, you'll get a rough idea of how she was built), so had a surplus of muscle mass to help support the leg. But she lived to 12 when cancer eventually got her, and never once showed any signs that her leg was anything but normal, despite being very active and walking 2-4 hours per day.

The propensity for animals to adapt amazes me. Idiot boy (male dog) currently has a boot on and a cone as he’s got a nail infection. He’s realised the boot gives him better grip on floors and the cone gives him a bumper for furniture/legs etc. So he’s currently a bulldozer with extra momentum.

Beautiful dogs. Sadly they were the breed involved in the recent death of an 11 yo in Alberta. As with most dog attacks, sounds like a bad owner and the dogs never stood a chance. There had been multiple previous attacks and the owner didn't seem to care.
 
Most people purchase/adopt animals the same way they would shop at the dollar store. (sadly the same way many have kids)
Then they are shocked that the animal (or child) does not meet their un-researched and un-reachable expectations.
Sadly it always ends up to be the animal that suffers, either through abuse, neglect or being abandoned as embarrassment outweighs common decency.
