Thinking of moving to a new city...suggestions, ideas etc are welcome

Is this dangerous digging work?
It can be if you're a cowboy and don't follow the rules. I've seen a few small injuries and one fairly major one...but in each instance it was the guys not following a rule, or being where they were forbidden to be.
Mining is extremely regulated. It is a very specific niche market, and the rules and regulations are ridiculous. The mining companies figure it's cheaper and easier to just follow/enforce the rules because being shut down by the gov't for investigations is ridiculously much more expensive.

Well if you want to move out west there's a big ramp up in our project area in Kitimat/Terrace in BC. With all the LNG and pipeline work coming up they are running into a serious shortage of workers, and even our site is scrambling as we are losing people in the general labour force. Mining is huge in the area, and if you can find a mine in AB/SK/BC that hires you they work 1 on and 1 off, with some going 2 on and 2 off. Paid travel depends on position. One of our operators is leaving and going to a 1 on/1 off job for 90k/year.

I've never considered mining before, but after this role is done I may try and jump onto a new one if our company is involved. Money is stupid and a 2on/2off would work for me and our family.

You really got me thinking. GF is still tied to Toronto for another year so we can't move. I take long trips out west, but taking so much time off work requires demanding financial responsibility. A job like that would probably work really well for me. I could spend the time off in all the alpine huts and fly the GF out when she has vacation.

How much do skilled trades make in those jobs?

Kingston isn’t too bad. We even have a new video trying to get people to relocate here. There’s a few big industrial players opening up here soon and there’s a few smaller industries about and some tech stuff associated with the university. House prices are way lower and we are close to border crossings, Ottawa, TO and Montreal. Good riding roads nearby and the airport just had a runway expansion so we are expecting a few new routes/carriers soon.
I love Kingston and the surrounding areas, used to keep a place just north of there near 38 & 7. The cold season is about a month longer than Toronto -- as I get older that's becoming important to me. I think I'll head deep into Niagara someday soon -- shortest winters, cheaper housing, and easy access to the US border and $99 flights to Florida and Vegas.

It all depends on how good you are and what the contract is set up as. The site I'm on is with LIUNA 1166 or something like that. There's different labour rates for different work. The operators get paid more, and I think they're up to about 150-180k/year but no one ever gives you a full value. Some claim they're clearing 2500-3000/week after tax. You can make that as a foreman in LIUNA 183 in Toronto if you're good and on the right job.

Mining is not union, not for the most part anyway, so it's a more typical setup. If you don't know anyone and are fresh no one will pay you to fly here. Typically they pay the flight from Vancouver, or a local hub. Some guys get flights reimbursed, but it depends on your role, experience, and how you got in/negotiated.

It's tough being away, and it's not for everyone. I'm lucky as my wife is understanding and we have her Mother staying with us to help out with the kids. I wouldn't do it otherwise. Financially it's a no brainer as we were able to eliminate all consumer debt within 6 months of me coming here.

I've actually had quite a few friends and acquaintances leave the GTA for Kingston and the surrounding area. They all love it and recommend it to us as well. If we didn't have so much family/friends here we enjoy seeing often we'd make the move out there as well.

I meet up with friends from the GTA area in Prince Edward County occasionally. They can leave via the north eastern end and get to the 401 at Trenton and I zip back on the loyalist parkway and ferry or via Deseronto and the 401. It’s not a big issue, especially when housing is half the price and a commute is practically non existent. Prince Edward county is chock full of restaurants, bars and vineyards/breweries. Plus sandbanks!

thought I was done with it, mining
had a simple little job in my town
zero responsibility, in my own bed every night

but I'm back on a 2/2 mine role in Alberta
wasn't looking but the offer had to be accepted

it's tough to be away, but the rewards are there
glad that role is working out for you m_p

Hello GTAM fam,

I have been thinking about relocating elsewhere within the country. GTA is amazing, however, I cannot afford anything here and I have had enough of "lifestyle". Just don't want to be house poor. In the past I have lived in Kincardine for a short period and I loved the peace there. Thinking of moving to Windsor or anywhere more affordable.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions are welcome.

If you liked Kincardine, why not just move there or even Lambton shores or anywhere around the Ontario blue coast? House prices very reasonable down there and if you like that lifestyle and scenery, tons of options.

BC have some great locations and so does cottage country Ontario. Pick your priorities, family ties, kids' education, hobbies and fun, etc and narrow it down. Or put 50 municipalities in a hat and pick one. :)

Great suggestions, keep em coming folks. We are a family of two (wife and I) and we have zero debt. Together we make about $5k/monhtly after taxes. Its not enough for GTA market :(
Not sure what you mean by not enough for GTA, Is that to just live, or to save and buy a house of your own?

Relocated to St-Catharines and find it very affordable and accessible to many outdoor activities, hiking trails etc. Two lakes, escarpment, river, close to the border, wineries, fresh fruit and produce.

Close to GTA, close to USA, good riding south of the border.

Jobs? Meh, many commute to the hammer and the QEW is getting worse each year.

So it’s not perfect. But, I enjoy the beaches when the water isn’t so high. We are out every weekend and winters are pretty mild.

Definitely cheap living when compared to the GTA. I know there are some Reno business looking and paying for experienced people but, I think that is universal to anywhere.

Now, I get around for work and see many places and know business owners in many communities.

Atlantic Canada is cheap living and outdoor lifestyle is common. Skiing, snow mobile, hunting, fishing. Winters can be long but, many enjoy it. Some friends in Bathurst NB have quite a life.

BC and AB is beautiful for sure. The interior is easier on the pocketbook where Vancouver is just as bad as Toronto for living.

Sarnia is a nice place to live and you have the Huron coast line to enjoy and again close to the border if that is attractive to you.

I found Kingston expensive for housing but, Brockville easier. Have no idea on job prospects east. The only reason I considered that way, we have family in the Ottawa area and hate passing through the GTA to get there.

Peterborough is indeed nice place. Good riding around there. I’d check on housing before the 407 make the commute too easy and increase housing. Lol

don't see it mentioned yet
but Cobourg is a really nice small city
just big enough to have everything and an hour from TO

beautiful natural beach that has kept the downtown alive
prices have gone up a bit the last decade
but not GTA-like, yet

rumour when I was living there
is that OnGov was run the Go Train out there
look for home values to go bonkers if that happens

either way Cobourg would offer a really nice lifestyle
and you're gonna see good real estate return long term

I'd love a 2 and 2 gig. The 2-1 isn't ideal but still gives me 2 weekends/month at home which is good. Home Friday night around midnight and leave the following Monday in the morning. F%@k....I can't believe I've been doing this for one year...

KW is far enough from the GTA to make a big difference in housing prices. Jobs are plentiful because of the huge hi tech sector that has made its way here.
500k will get you a1500 square ft home on a lot about 140x40.
Decent riding around Mennonite land out this way too.

We did that last year (North St. Catharines). Couldn't be happier. Was still weeding my lawn in Dec. and maybe shoveled my drive twice all winter (don't go to south N. Falls or Ft. Erie - they get hammered with snow). People in retail or the trades are nice and actually talk to you instead of the crap customer service you get in the GTA. I can get anything I need within a 5-10 min. drive and the housing prices are a lot less than the GTA. Toronto is 1.5 hour drive if I need to go, which I have only done twice since leaving. The thing that surprised me most was the volume of great eateries here. Amazing selection for eating out and they're not those boring national chains - privately owned and run places - fabulous! Then there's all the other things you mentioned too. I can zip across the border to buy something and be back in less then an hour if I time it right. Too many positives to mention. A lot of GTA retirees are moving this way. The only down side I]ve seen is the traffic on QEW is brutal on summer weekends because of people travelling back and forth to the Niagara on the Lake area. I just avoid travelling during those times.

Girlfriend left Toronto for Chatham few years ago, thought the money could make up for it. Nope, she was climbing the walls trying to leave. A little too sleepy as she was leaving every weekend to "go do something", and a lot of weekends back here.

Then she took a job in Windsor. LOVES it. Between Windsor and Detroit she has lots to do.

I was near Windsor last weekend for another job and I thought it was a great place. Amhurstberg/kingsville corridor. Absolutely beautiful.

Headed to Dover area next weekend. Haven't been in prob a decade and always for F13 so it'll be nice to wander around and take a look.

Peterborough is full of retirees and students.

Kingston maybe but traffic would drive me bonkers. What is it with that stretch of the 401? Every single time I use it I crawl thru Kingston. My sis lived there for 4 years, saved up enough money and bought a house in TO.

I have to travel to BNPD for work. One or two weeks a year in Port Elgin/Kincardine is enough for me. Of course I never go in the good summer month

Traffic hasn’t been too bad recently on the 401. Last few years they have been renovating all bridges and overpasses and that’s had an effect but they seem to be mostly done. The 401 has been widened to 3 lanes through Kingston now and that’s also helped. It’s accident prone though for some reason and all bad traffic recently has been large multi vehicle accidents.
