Thinking of moving to a new city...suggestions, ideas etc are welcome

Hello GTAM fam,

I have been thinking about relocating elsewhere within the country. GTA is amazing, however, I cannot afford anything here and I have had enough of "lifestyle". Just don't want to be house poor. In the past I have lived in Kincardine for a short period and I loved the peace there. Thinking of moving to Windsor or anywhere more affordable.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions are welcome.

Hubby and I want to move to Bancroft area eventually, but as a teacher, I lose my 15 years seniority and would have to start over again with a new board, so this probably won't happen until I retire...so, personally, I would look at the job market for your field to see what the prospects are and then go from there...Port Elgin area is nice (friends of ours moved there - he works from home, she drives to Toronto every Sunday and stays in the city and then drives back Thursday as there are no jobs in her field up there...their home up there was cheap - $275,000 for a 3 bedroom detached on a nice sized lot so her driving back and forth every week is worth it...apparently she has a bachelor here and the rent combined with their mortgage is still cheaper than a mortgage in the city)...what about Huntsville/Parry Sound area?...or go southwest to Aylmer/St. Thomas area....another friend of mine moved out there and he opened up a small engine repair business and she drives a school bus...they got a gorgeous home on a beautiful country sized lot for half of what the rates are in the city...

A friend has semi-relocated to North Bay and loves it up there. He still has some ties to the GTA because of aging parents and work, but prefers to make North Bay home and is maneuvering to make that happen.

Peterborough? Reasonably affordable housing and some.job prospects. House prices should climb when 407 link is eventually open.

Personally I wouldnt move to Windsor. I think it still has a way to fall before things improve. Maybe London if I wanted to move west, but it's not that cheap anymore. If you want to stay in the extended gta, kitchener/cambridge/Waterloo is probably your best bet for affordable housing and jobs.

Welland? Otherwise, how's your french?

It would largely depend on your career. Some places may not work depending on what you do. I’ve done London, KW and Calgary myself. I’d rank the them in this order: Calgary, KW, London. I’m not living out in a small city/town, I can’t handle that, either for my sanity or career.

If you just need a cheap place to live and easy find work (y) move to the rez shoot some fish and open a small pot shop.
... good money in small pots ;)

Lot's of job demand in Windsor for skilled trades and general contractors still as is health and education. I know 2 premium car dealerships that are desperate for techs, and the Municipal gov is at the beginning of a massive retirement loss so they're looking for personnel. One of my best mates just moved here from GTA, works at one of the hospitals. Bought a really nice house for 220K. Loves it here.

I don't see the Minivan plant going anywhere in the next 5 years but after that who knows. I wouldn't get comfy there but you can make good bank in the meantime in skilled trades.

Traffic is a breeze compared to GTA, housing is a fraction of the cost, 10 minute drive to get across border (40 on a bad day) Major sports and entertainment in Detroit, far better winters, earlier spring and later fall. Air quality has never been better, lots of coal plants in mid-west converted to natural gas made a huge difference, can't remember last time we had a smog day,

Unfortunately downtown is a fentanyl-soaked wasteland. Infrastructure is getting deficient, some areas are flood prone regarding sewers, and property taxes are above average. About 4K on a 220K house. I live in the outskirts so don't see any of this except the higher property tax.

PM me if you have any questions.

If you like lots of snow this is good. I was up there recenlty and it all looks nice now. Someone I met showed me some pictures of the snow they had in May, several feet of it, umm no thanks.

This is a motorcycle forum. If riding bikes is your hobby then southwestern Ontario in general (basically anything past K-W) is a wasteland of straight, flat roads. If you thought the GTA had a shortage of scenic areas, London - Windsor have even fewer.

But ... like others have mentioned, it depends on where you can find work. I'm semi-retired so it's starting to matter less. If it weren't for ties to the GTA, I'd probably be heading for eastern Ontario. Still might happen at some point. For now, I'm still 3 minutes away from the end of the built-up area, soon it's going to be 5, but still manageable.

If I remember correctly, OP no longer has a career (of his choice) so I don't think that is a worry for him at the moment. Finding a job at a decent wage would be his priority I'm guessing so I cant see how a small town will be of much benefit.

You can scrape the **** out of your pegs following the Thames River to Chatham. Very scenic rides along Detroit River down to Amherstburg and along Lake Erie out to Rondeau. Even better the roads are empty on weekends , especially Hwy 50 along Erie out to Leamington. I can be a prole and stop at Colchester Bar and Grill or other choke'n'pukes with 100 other bikes, or I can be bourgeois and rub elbows with rich greenhouse owners at a dozen wineries along the way out to Rondeau. There's an 8 month riding season down here, make of it what you want.

Edit: I can scrape the **** out of MY pegs, 34 degree lean angle. Sportbikes may need more of a challenge... YMMV

Kingston isn’t too bad. We even have a new video trying to get people to relocate here. There’s a few big industrial players opening up here soon and there’s a few smaller industries about and some tech stuff associated with the university. House prices are way lower and we are close to border crossings, Ottawa, TO and Montreal. Good riding roads nearby and the airport just had a runway expansion so we are expecting a few new routes/carriers soon.

Great suggestions, keep em coming folks. We are a family of two (wife and I) and we have zero debt. Together we make about $5k/monhtly after taxes. Its not enough for GTA market :(

That complicates things slightly. Is her job portable? That may help you pick some viable options (eg she works for company X that also has an office in Y and they would be open to a transfer or she does something where all jobs are downtown TO and she will have to commute in to work).

She is a dental admin.

Well if you want to move out west there's a big ramp up in our project area in Kitimat/Terrace in BC. With all the LNG and pipeline work coming up they are running into a serious shortage of workers, and even our site is scrambling as we are losing people in the general labour force. Mining is huge in the area, and if you can find a mine in AB/SK/BC that hires you they work 1 on and 1 off, with some going 2 on and 2 off. Paid travel depends on position. One of our operators is leaving and going to a 1 on/1 off job for 90k/year.

I've never considered mining before, but after this role is done I may try and jump onto a new one if our company is involved. Money is stupid and a 2on/2off would work for me and our family.

Is this dangerous digging work?
