Thinking about buying a Mac laptop

I have a pretty base spec late '13 13" MBP, mine is running perfectly fine on El Cap. Maybe there's an app that's hogging resources? Check the Activity Monitor
It seems to be working fine when "Mail" is closed. Still lags but not as bad. I've tried clearing the data logs as well as reseting the NVRAM.
I don't really have much in terms of apps, what do I looking for in the Activity Monitor?

Back up your data and install major operating system iterations fresh.

Yeah, I plan on picking up an external hard drive some time this weekend and back everything up through time machine. How would I go about doing the rest?

"Starting over" is rarely necessary in OSX. I have a 10 year old Mac still running nicely on it's original installation through various updates.

Did you read my reply?

After upgrading to El Capitan did you install all of the subsequent patches and updates? If not you'll find them in the system updater waiting for you, some of them might help.

Secondly, how much RAM do you have? With every OSX upgrade comes more and more ram demand – best money you'll ever spend on any computer for a performance improvement is maxing out your ram.

8 GB memory. All updates are installed.

After "rebuilding" my mailboxes all seems to be working well now. Was a nuisance to say the least.

Good to hear...yes, sounded like a mail issue specifically. As someone else mentioned, Activity Monitor can be telling in these sorts of issues, making the problematic app/process stick out like a sore thumb.

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro and I just updated from mountain lion to El Capitan.

I really regret doing that. Safari is running extremely slow. Anyone encountered this? Solutions?
EDIT: Never mind I see you got it fixed.
