the "wave" - riding etiquette

Being new on the road I've noticed the more relaxed and confident you are (not cocky) the better rider you are.. this protects you and protects others on the road..

Actually many experienced riders would argue that confident new riders are the most dangerous (to themselves), and that an element of fear makes you safer and less likely to get yourself into a situation from riding beyond your abilities.

OP, it's okay to be nervous as a newbie. It means you pay more attention. Don't worry about etiquette at this point. I don't always wave back either.

Im so into this waving and nodding thing that i even peace sign to motorcycles when i'm on foot... It became intuitive now... I always do it before i realize that im on foot or in the cage...

And what do people on spyders do? One of these?

I didn't mean to be a snob, but I failed to reciprocate a wave to a rider on an e-bike today. I actually thought the rider was signalling a left turn, then realized that the rider was in fact, waving. That said, do you guys "wave" to riders on e-bikes and scooters or just other riders on motorcycles?

Im also new at riding but I love to wave , nod or thumbs up :) I am comfortable with even putting my left han on leg to give it a break lol and call me wierd but I love the feeling when people in cars do that double take and stare because I am a women on a bike.. lol The best is seeing young kids wave and smile in shock to see a women on it.. Just love it all around... Riding to me is freedom and amazing And I will say hello to every one..

Cheers and enjoy riding

Never to an e-bike. Hate those things.

Ebike riders are motorcycle riders that just haven't built up the courage to do it right yet. I like to encourage them. If they're on two wheels and they're brave enough to be on the road then, why not?

They're like the little kids on the side of the road and suddenly I'm now the trucker.

I won't initiate the wave but I won't snub them either. If they wave it means that they get it. In their hearts, they want to ride... They just haven't got a real bike yet.

I ride a 750 now but rode a 250 until recently. If I didn't get waved at because of the size of my bike, I'm not sure how encouraged I would have felt to continue riding.

I thought e-bikes were those contraptions that looked like scooters, but go way slower than real bicycles?? Hate those things.

you are only dismissed from waving if you are having your mid life crisis on a harley trying to figure out how to get into second and switch off your turn signal before the string in your soa hoodie jumps up and smacks you in the eye.

ha ha ha!! :)

Noticed something interesting yesterday... In the city, only sport bikes wave. Never seen a cruiser wave. On country roads, everybody waves, cruisers included. Maybe people really are friendlier in the country ;)

Cruisers wave to me all the time and I'm on a SS. I wave to scooters more often than e-bikes..but really I think most of them have no idea what the wave is (e-bikes in particular).

I've noticed that as well! Cruisers sometimes wave, SS always waves back! I wave as long as it's safe to do so!

i was walking with my gear on (no helmet though), and i peace signed to two sportbikes passing by. the first one didn't wave back and the second one did. the second bike had a passenger on it and my friend and I were joking: no wonder why the second one got a girl, cuz he's nicer. lol!

Naw, that was his sister. ;)

I passed a string of cruisers yesterday while I was in the middle of a long sweeper. I was crouched down and hanging off slightly. They almost all waved at me. But I just nodded a few times in response because I was very focussed on the corner. Odd situation. Usually I get stiffed by cruisers, not the other way around.

ya when i'm in the middle of a turn that requires much leaning and focusing, i wouldn't even wave to my mother.

I did want to wave at the pickup coming the other way in the next turn that was about 1.5 metres into my lane. But I wanted to wave at him with a crowbar. :D
