I remember listening to Ron Nelson every week on CKLN. Recorded that **** on cassettes and would dub copies of the best tracks for my friends at school. Crank it in the hallways from my beat up ghetto blaster. Sigh...i feel old.
I still have a bunch of vinyl albums from back then. A few classics off the top of my head- NWA and the Posse, My Uzi Weighs a Ton (met Chuck D last year at the show- was a ****ing amazing honour), Schoolly D - Saturday Night (on cassette), Smoke some kill (album), BDP (met KRS-1 in the 90's- very nice guy)- Criminal Minded (album)...actually-too many to list.
Those were authentic days of groundbreaking genre creation. The formula is constantly being added and altered (for about 30 years!?!- holy **** i'm old), but i don't think there can ever be another time like the early days when the style was invented.
Check this guy out- Greydon Square- this guy writes some heavy lyrics. Could use some better production for a lot of his **** though.
