The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

Hey, if it works for you, I'm not casting aspersions. I was just explaining why smartwatches don't do much for me. I have to adjust mine all the time, and they need service every five or so years, which can add up. But I have found little to recommend a smartwatch when I have to carry a phone around with me anyway.

Then again, I have almost 1000 LPs and two record players. Sometimes less efficient and more hands-on is more rewarding for me, even if it's not as accurate or precise...

Can't go wrong with Sam Cook.
And Gene Krupa Oh man...

I’m not sure I’ve ever had a watch that did not make it years past warranty . I think I’ve had one watch fail , fairly crap caravelle , and that was at the ten yr mark , and I’ve owned dozens of watches . With new watches I could care less about warranty .
Mostly, I agree. But the Squale I bought used was from a guy who'd had to have the movement replaced under warranty, so it does happen...

I've never had a warranty issue either. Paying over $800 for a Bulova that may or may not have a warranty is a lot for me. Obviously at the right price, I don't care about warranty anymore as the money I saved can pay for any potential repairs (or more likely can be spent on more watches as no repairs were required).

The Sam Cooke record was a nugget pulled from a batch buy (so many people listened to Herb Alpert!), but the Gene Krupa was a solo find. Such a good record, mono from the '50s.

I'm not a watch person but have thought about health tracking, particularly blood pressure. A quick search shows watches from $30 to 10X or 20X that. They all claim to be wonderful. Any thoughts. I tend to be hard on watches, not taking them off while hammering awa at projects.

I don't know of a watch that monitors blood pressure. Lots monitor heart rate. Some have more refined monitoring so they can do something similar to an ECG. Many of the colour screen watches require charging daily which is a non-starter for me.

FWIW, I have a garmin instinct that monitors heart rate. I rarely take it off. I charge it about once a week. I go through quite a few bands but the watch has never given me an issue. I got it around 2018.

I would not be buying any of the current watches solely for heart monitoring. Apple watch (and maybe others) have fall/crash detection which I see as a more useful feature.

EDIT:
It looks like there are a handful of BP watches. The samsung ones need monthly calibration with a cuff measurement to stay on track. I have no idea on the adequacy of bp measurements by watching your pulse.

I was wondering about the BP part because I have a battery powered monitor and eats batteries like Trump eats cheezies.

If I just wanted health data, I'd be looking at a ring rather than a watch, something like the Oura or Samsung. Not sure how fragile they are, mind.

I have a special love for Squale watches , I have a blue face one now I love , I’d buy a white or black face if I could find a deal .
The one I've been keeping an eye out for is their cheapest model, the black bezel 1545 with the curtain dial. But when I went to their website to get that link, I saw the new titanium Master with a paltry 120 (!) atmos depth rating. It's a beefy baby at 42mm across and 15.5mm thick, but I'm an absolute sucker for a sandwich dial:

Not not soured on orange at all , I keep looking at the Rotary super seven in orange , it’s affordable, I’m just not sure how “loud” I need a watch to be . Doxa orange , as worn by fictional secret agent Dirk Pitt would work .

Many years ago, I had a Swatch, sent to me by my S-I-L when she was in Switzerland. It sounded like a dripping tap.

I was visiting a friend, and he told his teenage son to check the kitchen taps. Sonny did so and a few minutes later got an earful for not shutting off the taps. It was the watch.

Got a $100 gift card recently as a gift and thinking of adding another $100 to buy myself a decent watch.

Any recommendation? I know this isn’t baller money. But spending the $100 on junk is not my preferred option as I’d like to get something to remember the gift.

Recommendation?

Is it basically cash or are you limited to one store?

I'm a big fan of buying used so I avoid the tax (and often much cheaper than new). Obviously the gift card complicates that path.

Today is Liquidator Day at HBC. Might be interesting to see what the BURL location has the MIL SHIPS and MR-G marked down to.
Might stop in on my way home from work. If that Bulova is still there and is ~$600 (and looks good on my wrist!), I might pick it up.

Rode the bike today, but I think there room in the backpack...
