The future of motorcycles is 100bhp.

If so, I'll be keeping my 200hp bikes for a long time.
 
Most accidents are caused by young riders on sports bikes / cagers being careless . This is just stupid.

People believe all sorts of things. Judging by conversations I've had, most Harley RUBs think that "layin' her down" will save them from an accident. Sportbike riders think that anyone who rubs the chicken strips off the rear tire is a badass. A lot of people think that adding a slip-on pipe gives them a wicked amount of power.

So why does any street bike *need* more than 100hp anyway? My bike's hp is only 85 yet it will take me to over 200kph easy. FAR above any legal speed limits. I have no problem with them putting limits and stopping idiots who ride like Ghost Rider and put the lives of innocent public in jeopardy. If you want to race, or a bike with insane power fine.. get one.. and ride it on a race track. Not on the street. Other than the very rare occassion when you might need a small burst of speed to avoid someting, it is not necessary for any bike to go more than 150kph on the streets, ever.

The same reason why any car would "need" more than 100hp. They don't. But it's not about achieving top speeds, it's about having an adequate/desired amount of power available for accelerating, pulling loads, etc. Then there are those who like to take their street machines to the track occasionally. If we only ever got what we absolutely need then there would only be one car... the "people's car".

Why stop there? Why not extend that argument to cars as well?...

The problem is that people in the free world hate being told what they can and cannot do, and many inevitably will find a way to get around such things, thereby creating more unwanted issues for governments to attempt to tackle e.g. a new black market for engines that get around the 100hp limitations. Of course, how would cops who pull you over (or the MTO for that matter) know you're packing a 110+hp engine? Will they be lugging around portable dynos?

Don't get me wrong, I both admire and detest obviously skilled riders who use common roadways as their personal racetracks, but there are other ways to combat stupidity of this nature outside of becoming a nanny state (e.g. not allowing newly licensed M1 and M2 riders the ability to purchase litre bikes; number of years having an M license dictating how powerful a bike one can own, etc. etc.).
 
I don't see regulations such as this getting too widespread. As the article mentioned, the 100hp limitation has not affected accident rates. Hell, my one and only accident happened on a bike making a quoted 52hp, and who knows how many of those 52hp were left after twenty years.

The same person would likely get in trouble on both a 100hp and a 180hp bike.

Why does anyone need a motorcycle? My car takes me around just the same, and it's better to the environment. I have no problem with people owning motorcycles, but they should only be allowed to use them at race tracks instead of putting themselves and the general public at risk. If you wanna ride, go to the track, but not on the street.
