More than 20,000 fines have been handed out in Queensland for illegal mobile phone use in cars and failure to wear seatbelts in November and December last year, with the Transport Minister vowing to roll out even more secret cameras.

We could probably pay off the national debt if they did this in Ontario..
Careful what you wish for, we have speed cameras that calculate average speed over a certain distance. Kind of like the 407 cameras that judge how far you drive in what amount of time and if it averages above the speed limit fines ship out.

when did that come into effect? I drive the 407 consistently (weekly) between dundas and keele st. cruise control always set at 125kph. Never seen a ticket.

Australia is not shy with fines or collecting. $269 for 14 over..I think my ancient KLR did it on purpose for bragging rights
Many radar cameras around and you get a flash from the cops coming toward you even if you are 5 kph over.
The CB300F speedo is off by more than 10% and hardly a hustle machine - I'll take the mileage advantage over the thrill factor - at $1.85 a liter - 10 ltr gets me about 300-340 km. Just a nice day riding.
Roads are lovely, 365 days riding and much fun on roundabouts and the range roads.
Insurance is low too...single seat option runs about $280 per annum for liability including rego and no stickers needed. All done online.
Aus drivers pretty courtious and good lane discipline. ( thankfully given some of twists )
Now this is for a small city/region. The big cities I'd guess the same issues as Toronto.
It'll come here eventually in the name of safety.
- Red light cameras - I agree with
- Speed cameras - yes in school zones, no in normal zones/highways
- Texting cameras - sure, let's have it
- Average speed cameras - oops, I'm fooked
In Poland they have zones with the average speed cameras, so you'll see people figure out they're going too fast, and either slow down hard or just stop for a 10min break so they don't get tagged. Stupid, especially if there's a gas station or coffee place b/w the zones...just stop for gas/food and you're good to go.
But these zones are heavily marked. And IIRC in Australia speed camera are marked very heavily. Memory serves me right: Camera in 500m, Camera in 200m, Camera in 100m...if you can't slow down with that type of signage...you deserve it.

I also remember no one telling me about it. Driving from my home town to my grandmother's place back in the day would take 12-16hrs. Took me 8hrs this time because I pressed the wrong town (same name) into the GPS and then had to cross a national park for 70km at 40kph.
Went a few years ago, 140km/h highway speed.
- 140...everyone is passing me
- 160...most are passing
- 180...lots still passing
- 200...few still passing
- 225...I was doing the passing until my wife asked what the '225 meant on the GPS as she couldn't see the dash
Best was the small BMW 118d was buring 4.5L/100km at 200kph. Love that car. Wish I could've brought it here.
I didn't get a ticket as we stopped for coffee/gas often.

Reminds me of France before they dropped the unlimited speeds. Baby Mercedes could sit at 200 kph and rarely get overtaken but every once in a while I'd get flashed and need to move over ..most often was a GTi VW wacking along at 225.
Best was doing the autobahn at 160 in a shitbox 1.3L something and the big Mercedes blew by on a sweeping curve I'd guess at 250 and actually rocked my little car. It looked like something from the future as it took that beautifully cambered curve, guess those days are long gone.
Last trip on the Scottish 500 was a 6 day jaunt with single lanes and lotsa sheep to dodge,
