Telemarketing... What are your options?

i just registered my number @ https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/
fast and easy, but they have a 30 day grace period. Oh and by the way newspapers and charities are exempt.

DNCL has not worked for me. Totally ineffective. And the process by which you file a complaint requires getting a bunch of information about the caller which is never possible to get. I've tried.

I'm pretty sure that by the way the people who call are speaking, that the call is coming from outside Canada, which means the CRTC has no teeth.

People are missing the point...if this is on your cell you're paying for that call. This is one of the few stupid countries where incoming calls cost you money. Ask for an address to send the bill to....probably won't get you anywhere though.

free weekends and evenings

also can get a plan for free incoming.

Nah I am typically awake at that time. Its the 8am on a Sat that pisses me off.

1. Telemarketing Rules

  • Among other things, the Telemarketing Rules require all telemarketers to:
    • identify who they are and, upon request, provide consumers with a fax or telephone number where they can speak to someone about the telemarketing call,
    • display the telephone number that they are calling from or that the consumer can call to reach them
    • only make calls and send faxes between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekends
    • maintain their own do not call lists, and
    • register with the National Do Not Call List.
If someone is calling you at 8:00am on a Saturday, report them to the CRTC.

But if the number that they are calling from is hidden from call display or is spoofed (which it always is), or if they won't give you a phone number (which they never do), how do you report them?

I had exactly one telemarketing call to my cell phone. That was immediately followed by me making a very angry phone call to Rogers customer service, insisting that the incoming phone call immediately prior not be billed to my air time and that this call (the one to Rogers) not be billed to my air time, otherwise I would be taking my business elsewhere. Haven't had a single telemarketer call since.

The extreme method would be to call police, to have the call checked. It takes police calling the phone company, to have that information released. This is generally only done in cases of things like harassment though which repeated calls, despite being told to desist, is considered to be.

That doesn't even work. Had a guy from Nigeria calling our house 8 times a day for a month and the phone company couldn't block the number cuase they can only block 10 digits then we called the police and they said it was out of their jurisdiction. Didn't call Interpol though...maybe they could have helped.

RCMP would have been my first call, in that case.

The ones that piss me off the most, and I have no idea how they got my cellphone number, is a series of numbers starting with 705-444-####.

They always call, but when you answer not a word is said. No one is on the other side. If you call back it says line disconnected.
I block one number and 10 minutes later there is a different 705-444-#### calling, my block list is full of them.

A google search of the number turns up that somebody managed to trace the number to Cranberry Resort in Collingwood, which more google searches indicate is a very shady actual hotel. I still can't figure out what the purpose of them calling and not saying anything is, nor can I get them to stop calling... as they claim to not know what I am talking about if I call the hotel directly.

Likely it is an auto dialer. It calls your number, you answer but they do not have a person available (tied up talking to someone else) to talk to you so it waits a second or so and hangs up, moves on to the next number.

This is one of the best applications of the disconnect triple tone at the start of your voice mail, because the system will record your number as out of service and remove it from the dialing database.

Did you fill out a ballot to win something at one of the bike shows? Last time I looked at these they were still using negative opt-ins. Which is technically illegal. That may be how they get your number.

That opt out thing was the reason why I dropped my Cycle Canada subscription, years back. They put tiny text and a check box on the back of their subscription card. I missed it, and suddenly I'm getting junk mail and calls from their "affiliated sellers."

I've had this cell number since 2005, and it's only calls for newspaper subscriptions that I receive.

Also companies that you are currently doing business with. Rogers calls me all the time.

Companies that you currently doing business with are required by law to accept your request to be put on an INTERNAL do not call list IF YOU ASK FOR IT.

Rogers hasn't called me in two years. You have to REQUEST it, though - they will never make the offer.

Thanks. Good information.

I hardly ever have my phone turned on. I got a call once from some guy, told him it was the wrong number. He let me know he's been trying the number off an on for almost a year before he finally got me.

I did request it and it didn't help. It wasn't until I said both that if I got one more call I would report them to the CRTC AND that I would move everything to Bell, if I received one more call, that they finally stopped calling.
