Telemarketers

You really have two realistic options. Your number is on a list of valid numbers that they sell to each other. The Canadian no call list is a total failure so that is not going to help.

In fact since putting myself on the do not call list, the number of telemarketer calls that I received seems to have INCREASED. When the callers are US or off-shore, there really isn't a lot that can be done to sanction them.

The do not call list was sold to telemarketers to generate money

Call display. I screen every call. If I don't recognize the name or number, I don't answer it.If it is a real person, they'll leave a message, and I'll call them right back. Most telemarketers will just hang up. Except the Captain. He always leaves me a message.

Why on Earth would anyone buy something, that was being provided to them for nothing?

Because this DNC list also includes unlisted numbers and cellphone numbers that people registered to it.

You miss the point. How are telemarketers supposed to know that they aren't supposed to call you? They're provided with the list. They don't have to buy anything.

Not to mention that (until recently) they were giving the list to pretty much anyone who applied for it (and paid the nominal fee, of course) without verifying their supplied credentials. That included a large number of foreign companies which submitted applications directly with dummy addresses, because they knew the applications simply weren't being scrutinized.

Telemarketing companies have to buy the list from the phone providers unless they autodialers with increments of 1 or random calling (which they rarely do now). It is the company's responsibility to update their call list regularly which includes the numbers removed that were subscribed to the DNC list. From what I was told from my boss, legally, they need to update their list monthly which they never do since it costs them more money. (plus, why would they? Do you think people would really take legal action from a telemarketing call? People say they do/would, but they don't cause nothing comes from it)

In 4 telemarketing companies they all used auto dialers which have a preset list of numbers to call loaded from the database(the list that was bought). All the auto dialers were different programs but had the same concept.

Where did you hear about them "not having to buy anything"?

This was after him talking to his supervisor to know how much is to call to Antartica.

This thread reminds me of the last week when the Weed Man called me. I promptly started asking him how much for a QP of the good stuff, and that he would have to beat the quality and prices of my current dealer.

Last telemarketer called me about cleaning my ducts. I played with them by asking question about ducts and finally saying i have no ducts, only hondas and suzukis.:)

Lol! I told that same prick (or facsimile) that I didn't have ducts, only chickens!

Back in high school, worked telemarketing for Weed Man, had some fun times ;)

I had a boyfriend who always messed with telemarketers. He used to tell the people calling trying to sell newspapers subscriptions he was blind and then act all offended as if they were making fun of his "handicap" Pretty darn funny :p

It's more fun to ask them if they could hold on for a minute, then go away for a couple of hours.

Then there are the door marketing types. "I'm from the gas company....blah blah blah." One actually got as far as the hot water heater to verify some label and then she said something about needing my name. I had two words. "Leave NOW!" Too bad she was really cute.
With a scanner and printer, Photoshop and a laminater anyone can make a serious looking ID tag.

Not all of them are good enough to make it in the door. I had one show up saying that he was from Consumers Gas, while wearing a baseball cap with another gas company's name on it.

I stopped answering the door altogether after one guy collecting for a "charity" pushed his way into my house and kept insisting I must have some cash somewhere. So many scammers out there.

That's my approach as well. When 000-000-0000 is calling, it's not high on my priority list to answer.

I took that time to finish my meal or browsing the web.
