Tank bag recommendation

I've been riding with my laptop to work.
I used the Icon Urban Tank bag and the Alpinestars Tech Aero Tank Bag
Both of them are really good and fit my 15" Macbook Pro perfectly.
And they have backpack straps to make it easy to carry it around.
I haven't have any issue with the magnet affecting my laptop.

Pros and Cons

Icon Urban
+fits 15" laptop and lunch box and a sweater.
+backpack strap
+helmet strap
-no rain cover
-can't be use on plastic tank
-backpack strap a little weak

Aplinestars Aero Tech
+expandable to carry even more
+detachable map holder
+built in rain cover
+2 mounting options, strap or magnet
+well made with waterproof zippers etc.
-can't carry helmet
-hard to fit laptop in the laptop sleeve
-more expensive

I no longer use the Icon bag since I have a plastic tank on my F800s.
But I would recommend the Icon bag, better bang for the buck and very useful.
Hope this helps.

I had the ogio tanker mini on my little 125 last year. The construction of the bag was awesome and good quality to boot. Had its own rain cover, nice big map picket and spacious interior for everything. Plus dedicated pockets for mp3 and eye glasses which I thought was nice. Came with a mounting system of straps for under tank mounding (and had a zipper so you can unzip the bag from the base and carry it like a backpack) or you can use the really strong magnets. Looked like leather too. Very nice bag for under 100 bucks

Thanks, looks nice but;

Won't fit my laptop. :(

Since you like the quality of it, I'll check for large Ogio models.

Thanks again!

No problem :)

One of the guys I was with on a roadtrip this weekend had a gears tank bag (dont remeber the model, but was about 5L, with magnets. Brand new.

At the end of our road trip, we noticed that the tank bad had scratched the hell out of his tank , both sides of the tank as well. Im assuming he must have got some dirt or sand under there, and that caused the scratching. There was nothing wrong with the back of the tank bag, where it touches the gas tank, that we could see.

I think if I was to ever get a tank bag, it would have to be one that has a mount to the gas cap, and never touches the tank.

I have tried placing a few tank bags on my zx6, and I never liked how it felt when riding. When getting a big lean on, my outside forarm would touch the bag, and be a distraction (worried about knocking it off in the back your mind mainly.) Might not be such an issue on cruisers and such.

why not just use a backpack if its for commuting to work? other than that I use a smart phone its much smaller and easier to carry.

Thanks, that's what I'm using now. As for the laptop: work issued and I'm required to take it home for reasons of BCP (Business Continuity Planning).

As for not liking the backpack, aside from the wear and tear on my jacket, the bloody thing is hot.

Ok, so I bought the Icon Urban Tank bag from Snow City last night (I'm getting to be a regular there now, good people, great prices and discounts for regulars). I drove home with it last night, I just tucked my current backpack inside, laptop and all and it fit nicely with room to spare. It easily holds my laptop and associated paraphernalia with plenty of room for a change of clothes including shoes and should function well as a overnight bag as well. The magnets hold better than I thought they might and the bag fits like it was made for my bike. I was a bit concerned about it interfering with my arms/bars (as rib indicated) when turning tight but I didn't have any issues. Maybe because my Suzuki has a long tank?

I like the pocket by the seat for wallet/keys etc. and the side pockets are handy as well, the clear top for map/gps etc is pretty common but this one was larger than many others I looked. For under $100, if it lasts a couple seasons, I'll replace it with the same (I guess I'm hard on backpacks as I go generally through one a season).

The only negative aspect is the carrying strap for holding over your shoulder is uncomfortable and of questionable security (plastic buckle). But the carrying handle is of good quality so it carries well much like a laptop bag.

I doubt I'll use the built-in helmet carrier but, it's nice to have if I find myself hiking any great distance and wanting my hands free.

Thanks for all the help!

Jim.

I've just gone balls out and spent 300 on a tank bag but only because my tank is a weird shape and the combination I have means the bag is raised off the tank and doesnt touch the paint. It's a bags connection tank bag with quicklock gas filler ring.

high-strength magnets will most probable affect your laptop's HDD life

from the link on the bag in post #4

".... bag attaches to tank with special high-strength magnets that are shielded to help protect electronic devices you may be carrying....."

And also I cover my tank with transparent plastic laminate to protect against scratches from my tank bag (which is too small for laptop btw)

Although it's possible to harm a hard disk with a powerful (keyword) magnet, it has to be pretty much touching the drive. LCD screens are much more susceptible to damage.

Distance from the magnet is the key as magnetic energy drops off by the square of the distance.

My laptop is work supplied so, I have no issues running a live test. So far, no issues, if there are, I'll report back on this thread.

Oh, and my bag has a rubberized padding that seems to protect from scratching, I think the key here is to keep the tank and the bag clean.
