Taking care of yourself in Covid

I’m similar to @Ash ... I think about it, do it in my head, and then feel better that I considered it. But you’re all right...action needs to be taken. While I love the WFH thing....it’s horrible for my health.

Time to get cracking on those walks again. I always feel 100x better after a 4km walk around the neighbourhood.
My trick is to have a plan, on the wall or phone or whereever. And you have a scheduled time where you will do it.

It's not a "if" i do it, just get moving. Pick something reaaaaaaaaaaaaal easy to achieve at first, for me it was running 1km minimum... there's no reason to not run 1km even if i don't feel like it, its gonna be over in less than 10 minutes and i won't be sore because of it.

Then the 1km turned into longer distances, and then i started more structured plans... but if i didnt follow the workout of the day cause i REALLY didnt feel like it, i'd still do 1km.
Then you build onto it once it's a habit! I don't even enjoy running that much, but i think i enjoy the process and success of keeping it up more than anything else lol.

I’m considering doing that ‘Couch to 10k’ program. If I can get the wife out of bed at 6am we can hike Erindale park for a few hours and be home before the kids fully wake up. But that’s not fair to the MIL.

I'd suggest you Start with the c25k
Once you can run the full 5k then build up from there to get to 10k. There's something to be said about being able to run continuously, but slowly, it's a different type of workout and the body can recover faster from that

Also to be fair to your MIL, you are giving her a roof over her head. :p This just ensures that the income for that roof keeps coming in steadily as you stay in good health/shape. ;) It's just sound logic after you repeat it 4-5 times

Everything is sound logic if we can repeat it to ourselves enough times ;)

I have put on around 35 lbs from last year till now which really shouldn't scare me but it kind of does though. I used to play football (soccer) during my childhood and early teens and aspired to be a racing driver during my late teens - so used to a lot of running and workout.

But over the years, things changed. Moving countries meant no one I knew to indulge in sports and hobbies. Don't really have the same amount of passion that I had in my earlier years for anything. I'm glad at least I ended up buying a motorcycle, which I had promised myself I would do. My wife being a foodie - takeout was 2-3 times a week to try new things (and we both hate to cook) which reduced now to once a week after me kicking and screaming, and we try to divide and conquer. Running 2 km nowadays is a big achievement lol

That's how it starts!
When i was telling my friends in January i was running 1km daily minimum they were telling me "whats the point (in gearing up, layering, etc) for just 1km"
But I'm heavier than when i was 'a runner' in my 20s and way more injury prone now... so i have to be realistic in my goals and expectations. Start small, nobody really "cares" and you're doing more than everybody else who's not doing anything. Realistically, the baseline doesn't start from what you used to do decades ago, but from what you can do NOW... and just focus on improvement.

Totally makes sense and these days I do short runs and smaller workouts at home. Better to start slow and build on it. Also, every ride on my motorcycle (with clip ons) is a good reminder/motivation to keep at it.

@nobbie48 - Not blaming anyone but me, I think that's how it goes for anything you have and haven't done.

There has been a little talk about not getting enough exercise. And of course most of us have gained weight. Alcohol sales are way up and mental health has become part of the problem.
Have you made any changes to cope during this tough time?
I learned how to bake bread etc last year and have since gained about 25lb. And of course it all goes down good with some craft beer. Decided i needed to take better care of myself last month, so i quit drinking. DONE. Surprisingly i don't want the same fattening foods anymore that went with the beer. But omg, even with eating a handful of prunes every morning i still need something to get things going. Next step is to get back to my 5km walk every evening.
Gained weight. Check
Alcohol buying up. Check
Exercise routine down. Check

My crazy cool 20 something doctor with flaming red hair a nose ring call me up and says “hey Mike, we just looked over your last stress test and your bloodwork... lay off the beer and get off the couch. Im giving you 60 days to get your diet and exercise **** together. We’re meeting June 15, bring your IPhone... we’re going over the data”.

she’s so nice.

I need a doctor like that! Sounds like he/she actually cares.
