Tag-along Riders

Isn't it proper riding technique to stagger when you get behind another bike? I stagger but I also keep my distance since I'm not actually with the other person. I also don't usually pull up right beside them at lights and try to have a chat. That has happened to me a couple of times and it was fine but sometimes they talk too much and I'm sitting there thinking, "I can barely hear what you're saying and the light is green. Can we go now?"

If you aren't going to ride "with" them, and you leave the normal following distance that you would behind another vehicle then you should choose your own lane position - it's dependent on the rider in front of you.

And staggered position is the safest position, because it gives you a longer braking distance, and theoretically safer because two bikes cover more space.

Really??!?

He's probably exaggerating but I'm ****** when some ******* flies by me in my own lane, too. If he gets in a different lane I could care less.

If you're already leaving the proper distance, the benefit of unnecessary additional braking distance may come with a compromise to blocking position because you're farther back. As always, it's simply a balancing of priorities based on the conditions.

Staggered is important for visibility, when 2 bikes breaking, you have 2 break lights so the car behind you can see it more as appose to 1 break light. (makes you look more like a car/larger vehicle)

Agreed....I just wanted to point out that it's not automatically right or wrong. So many of these discussions lead to arguments because many posts are full of absolutes that leave no room for judgement. If we discuss the benefits and the drawbacks, it gives the people asking the question more information to decide what to do.:study:

If they leave the proper distance behind as any other vehicle should, I have no problem with it. I will go into a staggered position with another rider with a safe following distance. Same at a stop. The only time I pull up next to another bike is if I'm with them. If not, I stay back the same distance a car should. I expect the same. If I don't know you, DON'T pull up beside me at a stop.

Really??!?

Absolutely. There's zero reason whatsoever to buzz a stranger in their own lane doing double the speed they are... you're deliberately risking their life... could spook them so much they drop a log in their pants and lose control of their bike in extreme cases... could smash right into them, etc... and for what reason? your own childish and selfish enjoyment of knowing you scared the crap out of some guy?

that type of **** i have no patience for.. you go by me in the lane next to me at 300 km/h and i have no issue with it whatsoever, but deliberately effing with me for no reason at all makes you completely undeserving of any sympathy or respect

It's a brotherhood, man...if you think this way it's time to sell the bike and get into sports cars or other douchey hobbies

I hate big HDs with no mufflers but I'll still roll up and at least give a nod or a peace sign at lights

not every one buys a motorcycle to make friends and be chummy with everyone... i hardly see how wanting your own space to not be crowded whether you're moving or at a stop as "douchey"

making small gestures of respect and not cowering in fear at the very thought of interacting with your fellow human is hardly "being crowded" or "making friends and being chummy".

the person beside you, for whatever reason, is also risking their life.

it's funny, because the people who are anti-social on the bike are usually the same ones who can't seem to manuever at slow speed or make a turn without wobbling, your experiences may vary
