Tag-along Riders

I ride to work when I can and once in a while will get a "tag-along" show up and ride with me - same lane, staggered, as if we left together. Never bothered me as the two instances I can recall they seemed to ride decently and I kind of feel more visible with a second bike near by which I think is a big plus especially when it's dark.

When I've come up to another rider I've never jumped in like that as I don't know how it would be received. What's the etiquette? Do you let people ride with you or tag along with others?

I can only speak for myself. I don't like it. I know I'm not, but I feel responsible, at least to some degree, when someone joins me. Fortunately I'm usually too slow for most people to stay there and they leave. And at stop lights? Piss off. I have enough friends.
....so I don't join others either.

Get that on highways a lot, not so much on city streets. I don't really mind as long as they stagger and keep distance.

I second this. Twisty roads up north for example, I'm the guy that will actually pull in somewhere and let them go. :dontknow:

As long as they're staggered. Don't want anyone ramming on to me. Would you rather have a car/truck follow you or a bike? If you're too slow for their liking I'm sure they'll just pass you anyways.

I agree, I'd rather have a bike that only needs 1/3 of the lane holding that space. I feel we might as well group together for better visibility. For that reason I don't mind people joining me, but I'm usually too slow for them to stick around long.

I don't know if I'd join up with a group of more than 2 or 3. I would worry about messing with the sweep if it's a large group. Could see him getting confused, trying to get you in front of him.

Otherwise, I don't hesitate to join up with others either. If they don't like it, they can either pull away at a speed I'm not willing to go, or slow down to the point that I'll move on. Either way, I'm not worried about "cramping their style", or whatever other problem they'd have with me following them as opposed to someone else.

I have joined up with a couple of riders on the 401. Keep my distance and staggered. Several times we will exchange a wave when I am lane changing to get off a highway 6. I have had a few riders join me and so far they have used a staggered position and have not crowded me.

On the highway I like the visibility an extra rider provides.

It depends.. if I'm out for a pleasure ride and I'm solo, I don't want people I don't know/trust riding any where near me. If I'm commuting (Vaughan-Guelph or Guelph-Vaughan), I don't mind someone else riding "spirited" with me to get off the 401 as fast as possible and onto the 407 where it's calm and cruising all the way home

I've actually rode a few times with the same guy on a cruiser at like 530-6am going east on the 401 from guelph all the way to 407 east, at a pretty good clip... keeps me a little more alert after a 12 hour nightshift

I do find however, most riders are not quite as... anxious... to get home as me, so I lose them pretty fast

Mostly happens on the highway, sometimes I do it as well, I'm always staggered and keep my distance.

On Friday, riding in a group of 3, full leathers in the left lane on the 401... some squidster on a Gixxer (shorts/running shoes/t-shirt) decided to tag along, I'm staggered in the left position in the left lane on the hwy he decides its okay to ride/almost pass me on the right and stop beside me. Don't f*cking stop beside me and ride side by side if I don't know you. :angry6:

I've had a jackass or two buzz me in my own lane on a clear and open 4 lane highway doing at least 100km/h faster than I (I don't ride slow either).... stuff like that makes me wish death upon fellow bikers, completely unwarranted, juvenile, and incredibly unsafe

Apparently you do.

Apparently you do.

okay, let me know the next time you're out on the highway doing 130 and I'll buzz you at 250 and see if your opinion changes at all

A lot of riders need to get over themselves. WTF do people expect other riders to do when they come upon another rider? Turn around? Go home? lol ...please....

Me, when I happen upon another rider on the streets I will follow staggered, in a safe distance just like any other vehicle. If traffic slows or stops I wouldn't think of riding up beside the other rider. I will stop behind them just as I would if it were a car in front of me. If you're in front and I feel you're going too slow, you'll get passed just as any other vehicle on the road.

There is no "etiquette" you're just another vehicle on the road.

Now, if the idiot is pulling 12 o'clock wheelies behind you, bouncing his rpm's off the rev limiter then that's a different story. But if they're just riding along...carry on.

My thoughts exactly! WTF is wrong with people? Someone else is riding STAGGERED behind you, not blocking or anything, and you get upset? If you are such a sensitive type, change the flipping lane.

Y U Heff to be Mad?
Clearly you didn't read this thread properly (or my post) staggered behind with a safe distance seems to be the general answer in this thread, but pulling up right beside me or passing me in my own lane is unacceptable.

A small group of riders is more visible to cagers and therefore safer than a solo rider. So no problem for me, but too close especially on curvy roads is no good.

Ok so we've established that staggered is ok but ridign alongside someoen else or passing in the same lane is not. What about at a red light, is it ok to pull up next to someone? Since you're not moving there should be no safety concern? I've had people do that to me and didn't mind but what do others think?

I'd say no unless invited.
Especially ifyou are listening to music or have earplugs in - what's the point and full face are not exactly conducive to chat ( tho I wear a 3/4 for that exact reason ) I usually have tunes on and if not -33 db earplugs.....say what???!!

I prefer two riders staggered as well....better bubble
