Tablets - iPad vs Android vs Windows

I have to say the iPad Air would be my first choice if not for:
1) Price
2) iTunes
3) Inability to play downloaded movies

I'll check out reviews on the Galaxy Note 10.1.

1) yeah, ouch
2) other than backing up my phone and tablet I don't use iTunes for much, almost everything is done via cloud
3) what are you talking about? viPlay has no problem playing everything i have thrown at it..

I currently have a Samsung S4 as my phone, but prior to that I had an iPhone 4s (notice the "S4" and "4S" are opposite -- creepy!) for 2 years. I'm comfortable with both OS's.

Some of the movies I download are MKV format. I suppose I could convert to MP4 first. Which program are people using?

BTW, how to copy movies, photos, MP3's, etc. without iTunes?

viPlay plays MKV natively. another must have program is TuneIn radio, they have radio stations from all over the world.

lookup the android app local if you really want to get geeky
also Google will backup your tablet
root your tablet and you click one button to backup everything or just what you want Titanium Backup

What do you use to transfer MP3's and movies? If you're going to say Dropbox, it'll kill my bandwidth cap right quick!

While not apple, if you have a device that takes micro sd you just use a card reader. Drag and drop. Plug it in to said device. Done. No bandwidth

Use an external 64gb+ micro sdcard on Android plus you can set a synch folder to your Dropbox
so
1. when you are in your home the device will connect to wifi automatically and synch the movies/music etc... from your laptop to your tablet
2. setup the same synch deal via BT or wifi with your phone for extra backup of photos
3. setup an auto synch from tablet to laptop or NAS to transfer your photos/movies etc...

In short there is a lot more you can do with Android imo
Having the ability to add external memory is really useful

Navigon or CoPilot are really cool GPS apps to have on your tablet (the maps are stored on the unit, so no wifi/data needed)

actually i use iTunes but I'm on a mac so i don't have the iTunes problems that windows users have... mostly i stream my movies from my NAS over wifi unless i'm planning on watching elsewhere...

As you have an Apple TV the ipad makes a very nice streaming virus free movie player. Takes me a few minutes to find a free new movie to watch every night then stream it to the Apple TV and watch it on the big screen with surround sound. That alone is the reason why I will get another ipad if this one ever conks out. Streaming Songza (a must have music ap!) is also good.

This is going to be a minority opinion, but Surface 2 (Pro) would be my choice.

Full productivity potential of Office Suite (If needed), SkyDrive for cloud storage and XBox Music Pass is awesome. Having a real USB is convenient and the App ecosystem is growing rapidly too.

Microsoft is dumping an unstoppable amount of cash at Windows Phone and Tablet markets, they are both poised to only keep growing...

This is funny, they have been throwing money long before and they still flop.
They actually had the opportunity to seize the market before Apple and Android came along.

Google has too many pieces that appeal to a wide audience and they are now assembling all of those pieces to capture customers in a 360 experience. Google has the money and the minds to do it. MS is a bunch of old computer guys playing catchup.

RIM has provided us a great case study of keep listening to yourself and see how long that lasts.:lmao:

I have a nexus 7 which I love, and recently won a Surface RT. The surface is really a nice piece of hardware, let down by a crappy OS. It's usable but frustrating. If it wasn't free I would have gone with a Nexus 10.

Can you put android on that Surface? might make it usable.

Not really feasible or worth the effort. Since the surface comes with a full keyboard and full copy of MS Office, it does have enough usability to make it worth keeping and keeping stock.

BB is not really comparable to MS. Take a look at MS financials and note how diversified they are when it comes to revenue streams... MS is not just an OS company, not by a long stretch....

As an example, consider that iCloud runs on Azure... Then there's Xbox, Dynamics, Consulting Services, Skype, etc...

I don't doubt MS is playing catch-up, but don't count them out. Since acquisition of Nokia for instance, WinPhone is outselling Apple in SOME geographies...

since you have an android phone you might wanna go with an android tablet, that way apps only need to be purchased once (at least i'm assuming it works that way on android cause that's how it works on ios).

I have an iPad, love it, i no longer take my macbook pro around anywhere... i use it to watch movies in bed and read books. as for must have apps, viPlay and facebook. i can't really comment on photo editing but i know some people have done some neat stuff entirely on the phone/tablet.

What are the advanced features for $3.99 on viPlay? Are they necessary?

I've had my Air for about a week now, I love it. If you don't mind the Apple world, it really is the best thing going.

Had ours since launch.

The 2 things that stand out for me : impressive display, and the holy-crap amount of apps available. Esp for children's education. Decent unit, and only went with it because it was $50 cheaper than the Samsung Note 10.1 2014 i was eyeing.

After being used to BB10 gesture based OS (which I still feel is superior), kind of annoying fiddling with the home button. But not a deal breaker.

You can use gestures to get back to the home screen, though I am sure it is not as smooth as the BB one. There is no direct to home gesture that I know of, but you can use 4 fingers to bring up app switching and just go to the left where the home screen in.

I always hold my mini in landscape mode, so the home button is always by my thumb, laid out very well for my hand size.

Bought surface RT for 199 during black Friday for gf. It was pain to get it up to date with latest updates and to win 8.1. Lost MS office suite in the process too and had to refresh the tablet to get it back.

Besides that, it's pretty good for what she does. I actually like the tile UI. I've used both Android and Apple. I like that it looks different and fresh.

I ended up getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition a couple weeks ago and am very happy with it. It was a little pricey, but still $100 less than the Apple iPad Air 64GB and it didn't have the pen (more on this later). Also, my wife is already familiar with Android and she could jump in right away (she is not tech savvy). I waited for boxing day sales, but the only place that had them on sale was Future Shop for $20 which sold out right away both online and in-store. I ended up going to Canada Computers who had them in stock and they price matched Future Shop so I was happy.

As for the tablet, the display is amazing! The colours are very vibrant without being over saturated or overly contrasty. Reading, watching movies, and looking at pictures is amazing. In fact, I started noticing how low quality some of the photos on Instagram and facebook are! I haven't taken advantage of the pen feature that much. I still have to install some heavier-duty photo editing apps like Photoshop Touch, as well as Pen Window Manager which lets you add more apps to the pen window. FYI, I prefer the pen to a stylus on the iPad as it is more precise and there is a place to store it on the tablet itself (a little feature, but very handy). I haven't installed a microSD card yet as I have plenty of room left on the onboard storage. When I start filling it up, I'll look at getting a 64GB microSD bringing it up to a total of 96GB. My wife now uses this more than her Note 2 and laptop as it's more convenient.
