SV Starting problem *****HELP*****

I have a 2003 SV650. Tonight when i pushed the starter everything shut off completely. No lights nothing... when i shake the bike the lights come back on and everything seems normal until i hit the starter again and same problem. I was eventually able to jump start the bike but it didn't last long before the speedo said 299 KM/H and the bike shut off while riding it. no luck getting it back. had to park it at a hotel and get a ride home from work.

I thing it's electrical BUT??? I checked wiring as much as i could roadside but it has to be more than a loose connection..ECU??
Can anyone help PLEASE

Check the fluid level in your battery.

yes its electrical

Sounds like your battery is very LOW...when its below a certain level (power) it will not even trip the starter selenoid and will just die...typically below 8-10V.

Have you tried to bump start it?

Sounds like a battery terminal to me.
Was the bike acting "funny" before this incident (weird sounds, clicking from under the seat).
Did you change your battery recently (you should change it if you haven't yet).
Did you give it any accessories lately?

Could also be your stator but lets hope it isn't.

keep us updated.

Try a new battery and make sure your terminals are clean.

before spending $$ on a battery, i'd suggest to test the voltage out atlest

Not sure it's battery. It did this twice to me at the start of the season but it fired up the next day and was fine until now. I borrowed a buddies trailer this morning and got the bike. When I got to where it was still same problem BUT when I came home it fired right up with no problems??????!!!! WTF

I'll take it apart and check the wiring and battery connections etc. I'm not bad with mechanical but electrical is another story!

Thanks for the input

The is working again with no problems starting?? Didn't do anything to it? I checked it but cannot find any problems but I know that there is obviously a problem somewhere. I am afraid to ride it because there is no warning signs before it stops working it just won't start again.
Not sure what to do now?

you didn't really tell us if you did anything...
did you do anything that any of us recommended before? If you did, what did you see?

-Just noticed that you said "didn't do anything to it".
Why are you asking for advice on: "what to do" when we already told you what to check?

There is an issue with wiring harness shorting out on these under the gas tank.
Get a hold of Kamikazi on here, he has some more info on this as he was researching it himself for his SV.
It's a pretty simple fix from what I gathered.

There is a series of plugs (three if I rememeber) that pass through a loom right behind the steering head. You have to remove the tank and airbox to get to it. The plugs go bad and cut power intermittantly. Seen more than one do it. After you check battery terminals, and selenoid connections and chassis ground. Have a look at those plugs.

I am asking because there is a problem or it wouldn't cut out all of a sudden. At the wrong time!!! I just can't find it. I have checked the wires and battery terminals they are ok. I will take a better look at the relays to see if I can find anything..

Thanks

I'm with Ken. The connector that all power runs through from the ignition switch failed on me. I created a thread about it on SVRider. Check this for more info.

If you need more help, let me know.

Just want to ask you if this is the OEM battery (the original one)...
If it is the one from 2003, you need to buy a new one!!

My 2002 battery died and had to replaced it a couple of months ago

Op i know this might suck but you need to follow each wire closely, if you have a Bare spot and its touching Ground(frame) somewhere its going to shut you down... i spent weeks tracing 1 wire that had a bare spot....

I replaced the battery last year

So? That doesn't mean it's good or that the connection is good. Don't assume that because you've spent money on a part that's it's still good. That type of assumption will cloud the logic required for proper disgnosis.

Follow kneedragger's suggestions, he's right on the money ... start with the connections at the battery and work from there.
