hi guys...

this is not for me but it's for my girlfriend... we are trying to choose a bike for her...

question really is CAN A SUZUKI S40 HANDLE HIGHWAY SPEEDS?

We need this bike to handle highway speeds... i don't want it to be screaming at 5th gear... reason i chose the Suzuki s40 for her is because the budget is very limited... considering that we can get a nice s40 used in really good shape for about 3500, or a 2012 brand new for 4800, i'd like to see what else i can buy for her that has got enough power for highway speeds at like 120 km/hr ....

maybe a two cylinder 600 compared to the single Suzuki s40... or should we stick to the S40?

your help is appreciated

thanks :)

If you do decide on S40 you could turn it into something cool when the g/f is done with it. Google "Ryca"

I know about Ryca!!!... that's one of the reasons i chose this bike... but didn't mention it here cause it doesn't matter now... hahahhaa maybe maybe we will stick with the s40... the only thing i'm worried about is the bike not being able to handle highway :(

That 650 single can handle hiway no problem but will be no fun over the long haul. I'd rather have that engine under me than many others but bigger is better for hiway.

An S40 will make hiway speeds, not so sure it will be happy sustaining 120 for any length of time. I rode my bosses last year, it is a very cramped bike, not sure how big your gf is, presumably smalled then I would be :)

I am 200+ and just under 6 feet, the ride was not fun after the 1st five minutes. I dont think i am the size person they are targeting.

The bike is a tank and will last forever if taken care of and be very forgiving. Is your g/f a beginner or have some miles under her belt? You may want to look at star 650's and the smaller shadows too. They may be a bit more $ out of the gate, but she may not outgrown them as quickly

she is a very small girl... 100 pounds or so...
we ARE planning to do some serious touring this summer... forget about comfort .. that doesn't matter for us.. as long as the bike will be able to handle long distances at least at 100 km/hr, that's all I care about.

My fiance started on a Savage (now called S40) and it will handle the highway no problem, even 2-up. They are great bikes, and perfect to start on.

If you're on a budget, PM me, we're selling her Savage now that she moved on to something else.

The S40 is capable of handling hwy speeds. I am an athletic girl and I had it at impoundable speeds comfortably. And yes with a passenger also. So keeping it above 120 for an hour or more wasn't a problem. And she will be happily surprised at how quick it can be. Talk to Gilligan if you doubt me.

Very welcome. I think the reason why people say it cannot handle it is because it revs high and people think it can't handle it. Once you get to 100km/h the sound stays the same pretty much so anything above will be smooth.

If ever I get extra funds I would love to buy another S40 and mod it. There is a whole forum of 'savage' owners and you can see all the mods they have done.
