Suzuki GSX-650F vs SV650?

I bought a 2012 last week in Waterloo. Paid $7600 + tax, freight, etc.

My rational was that guys selling used ones are expecting to get 150% of the price they paid for their accessories. I looked at an '07 in Fergus for $5200 with 20,000 km and a "demo" bike from Inglis cycle in London. It was an '09 with 2000km and they wanted $6500. Balls.

I got a new bike with a 1 year warranty for an extra $1k. Buying used doesn't save lots of money apparently if you still have to pay the HST at the MTO office.

I am happy with it. It is my first bike. I am old enough to afford it and if I drop it, I can live with that. For $9k or whatever the total was, I can afford to walk away from a total loss as long as I am ok.

Going new made sense for me, or I have fooled myself into thinking so. Sure it would have been nice to find a great deal on a used bike, but I got tired of waiting after 6 weeks of sniffing around kijiji and autotrader. I didn't want to blow the summer looking for a bike. Nor did I want to buy a bike that I would be happy with for a few weeks or a month.

I totally understand what you are saying.
People are selling 250cc bikes for $500-$750 less than what they bought it for 1-2 years ago. I would rather just spend the full amount and get it from the dealership for that much. I'm leaning more and more towards a new one. I wish I had pulled the trigger on the SV650 for $7000. Now i'm thinking I might want a Ninja 400R. I'm going to go to a dealership and weight my options.

Keeping my fingers crossed. Again, I don't want to waste the summer searching for a "decent" deal.

SV650! .... dual spark plug per cylinder as well

you've got to decide -- do you want the twin-cylinder torque of the relative high end of a gsx650f. I've been riding a bandit - gsx650f predecessor. Use to wish I had that low end torque (and just like the sound of those L-twins) but I must admit -- that little bit of top end rush is addictive.

I've got an '08 gsx650f, that I bought new in '09. It's now got over 40k without any mechanical problems whatsoever. I find the seating position comfortable, and it's got more than enough power to get me into "lose your license" territory pretty quickly. I can recommend one with no reservations.
Having said that, I've never ridden an SV, so I cannot compare the two.
Good luck with your search.
