SUV recommendation

I drove all the 2011 SUV's. As stated, you're not gaining much room over a hatchback car with a small SUV (and you'll be paying for gas).
That said, the CX-5 is worth a look if it's big enough. I have the CX-7 and friggin love it. Sportscar interior and the exterior styling has held up so nice that's its a '08 and everyone thinks its new (125k and no issues). A joy to drive (although somewhat stiffer suspension compared to competitors but it corners much better - I've ran it around Shannonville).

4cyl escape/Tribute are reliable and good on gas. Not too pricey. Same can be said for the 4cyl Venza. All 3 are boring to drive.

Tucson isn't bad. Kinda small inside. The Sante Fe feels like driving grandpa's old buick (soft, slow, boring).

I didn't like any of the new Kia offerings. Felt cheap still.

New Escape is way overpriced imo.

I'd go for a wagon but none (except for the A4 wagon) call to me. Too iffy on going with a tdi VW in case I have to pay to fix it.

Wait for the new Explorer Sport, which will be out in late September ..

It comes equipped with the same Ecoboost engine as the F150. This thing will be a beast!

C'mon now.... you know you really want it.............

after having owned two suv in the last three years, i can tell you that i hate them. they are absolutely horrible on gas mileage, and the bigger ones drive like complete crap. .

People don't buy larger SUV's for their gas mileage.

You've been driving the wrong SUV's if you think they handle like crap. I can think of at least 3 that will put a smile on your face. :)

According to the SPAM emails I have been getting they now sell drugs and devices that will make SUVs unneeded.

Buy what they are selling and then just by a hatch/wagon or heaven forbid, van. Manhood and real utility....

Value smalue.....

And remember... Even if you have an empty garage be sure to desplay it in the driveway so your neighbors see it. Thats what it's about.

If it's my money, I'd look at a Suburu. It wont be cheap but if you are getting a portion back from a write off, why not.

I happen to get a company vehicle every two years. I have a Ford Escape FWD with auto. I've towed a bike to Florida, I have 3 kids and a dog. It has Sync which works great for your iphone or BB for calls and txt. It's probably the largest of the "small" SUVs out there and in line with the Tuson. Fuel consumption is in the 8L/100km range and in line with the Tuson as well. I find the fit and quality pretty good and prefer it over the Tuson.

Other than the fact it's like owning a taxi cab because there are literly millions of them out there, I really think it's a good little buggy.

The company does let us have a choice of the Nissan Rouge. It didn't have blue tooth at the time I was up for a new vehicle and it's kinda a girl's vehicle. The space in the back was a little smaller for the dog as well and the glass doesn't open separate from the hatch itself.

I would seriously consider the Golf wagon TDI but, the few I'm aware of, have had their share of issues with the tranny and I find them a bit small. Heated seats were nice tho. Great fuel mileage. Just don't own it outside of warrenty. At the time, no dealer wanted to part with one on a fleet cost and finding one with blue tooth and without the moon roof was near impossible. My company has funny rules about what equipment I'm allowed to have.

My wife needs a similar vehicle so we looked quickly at most of the small SUV's today.

All w 4 cyl and AWD excluding tax and fees

At ~30K
CRV (1% financing)
Sorento (1%)
Equinox/Terrain
RAV4
2013 Escape (2%)

At ~27K
Sportage (1%)
Tucson
Santa Fe (including 4.5K off because a new one is coming (@3%) or 2K off @0%) (roughly same price for base V6 or 4 cyl w sunroof)

At ~25K
2012 Escape (including 5K off because the new one is out, 6%)

Currently the leaders for us are the Santa Fe, Rav4 or 2012 Escape. We weren't impressed with the Sportage/Tucson (too small for similar money). Brakes on the Escape aren't as good (rear drums) and it's more truck like but it is a lot cheaper. Rav4 is in need of a refresh and should be 27 or 28 to be a real contender (my wife likes the vehicle, we are not sure about the price). I don't think the 2013 Escape is worth 5K more than the old one. We still need to look at the Rogue and Subarus. Tribute is the same as 2012 Escape but doesn't have Sync.

EDIT: As per fastar, need to look at CX5 too.
