I drove all the 2011 SUV's. As stated, you're not gaining much room over a hatchback car with a small SUV (and you'll be paying for gas).
That said, the CX-5 is worth a look if it's big enough. I have the CX-7 and friggin love it. Sportscar interior and the exterior styling has held up so nice that's its a '08 and everyone thinks its new (125k and no issues). A joy to drive (although somewhat stiffer suspension compared to competitors but it corners much better - I've ran it around Shannonville).
4cyl escape/Tribute are reliable and good on gas. Not too pricey. Same can be said for the 4cyl Venza. All 3 are boring to drive.
Tucson isn't bad. Kinda small inside. The Sante Fe feels like driving grandpa's old buick (soft, slow, boring).
I didn't like any of the new Kia offerings. Felt cheap still.
New Escape is way overpriced imo.
I'd go for a wagon but none (except for the A4 wagon) call to me. Too iffy on going with a tdi VW in case I have to pay to fix it.
