Support from close circle/ friends?

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if any of you goes through similar experience as I do which I call not much support from close circle and friends.

Biking is a passion for me and when I talk about it to some people in my circle they don't seem to happy or would say things like:"why not go for a car instead" or say things like "your life just got shorter"(that's the first thing I generally hear).

Even talking to my gf who supported me doing the class in the past seems like she's talking more and more on how I should buy a car (which I really don't need) specially after renting the last one when I went on a rd trip to see my folks. When ask her about my passion she supported me 2 yrs ago, she said:"Car is good, it's usefull, gives you a status; bike is just for fun, not the samething". Not the first time I'm hearing that, heard it in the past too ... wondering with all those remarks if it's a way to discourage me. (Of course based on my gf's reaction, I decided to keep this little new project of mine a little secret cause I wouldn't want to be suggested to buy a car instead just because I have the funds available ...)

Did/ does any of you guys/gals experienced similar situations? And if so how do you deal/ dealt with it?

Thanks!

Pretty common. I'm sure sky divers, etc. hear similar. I smile and say that my organ donor card is filled out.

"bike is just for fun" ....exactly. But not "only" in my case.

I bold the key items to your story. I suggest you ditch her now or move her to the friend zone before she ends up owning half your stuff and paycheck for the next 18-24 years of your life.

Onto your secondary issue, your friends don't ride and such they don't want to hear about it.
Secretly they are afraid and or envious of you BUT they are not going to tell you that.

You bought the bike for YOU...go to meets or setup your own meets (ice cream or food place) and you will meet other riders/ppl that share your enthusiasm.
You might even find a girl that rides or really like to ride with you.

You need to stand up for yourself and tell her if you don't like it, there is the door...then tell her to make you a sandwich while you run her a bubble bath with the nice smelling soaps and scented candles to go with it.:D

oh and don't worry that you wont find another gf...women are attracted to guys that are passionate...it shows confidence...plus bike...hope you have a good smile then you are on your way.

dont listen to this guy

A car is essential living in Canada. Unless you never leave downtown, which would be sad.

Are you bipolar or do you have memory issues? Just asking in a nice way, not mocking. Yet here you are as you put it reading from my book.

cruise session? I thought the whole idea behind a track session is to push the bike and the rider
Maybe i took a page out of the Ds book, i wanted to get 30k views?

I agree with you here. If you live anywhere but right downtown and don't plan on leaving there 2/3's of the year, a car should have been your #1 priority.

There are LOTS of ppl that do not live right downtown or midtown or in town and they do NOT have a car.

He has no kids and is not married. He picked his #1 priority...HIM and HIS HAPPINESS.

Go on school me, hell, help me get a Masters Degree.
You going to show us your car's rear tire since you know, you DON'T have a bike?

*pre-edit
Oh wait, you are going to show us your pics that you snagged from the web.

Do whatever makes you happy, if you can afford it. If your gf doesn't support you, you need to make a choice.

Sorry @bigpoppa I gots love for my fellow fatty, but I gotta side with @-D- on this one. Too many women will agree with you on something until you actually do it. This is only the beginning.
@clyder come out to some of the meets. Contrary to what you may see on here, most of the gtam community are good people. I should have started riding many many years ago and said eff that to everyone that was against it.

I have no doubt that's true. There's people who live everywhere and don't have a car. I just find it hard to believe someone would prioritize a bike over a car in our climate and area (excluding down town). This is from an outsider looking in, but imo, a car comes first.

I'm in the same boat. Though I just looked outside one winter when it was -30 and thought "who the **** would ride in that," so I bought a car first. True story.

I will add, do what makes you happy and whats best for you. Just think ahead.

Uber, Zip Cars, Rentals are cheap also...get a car when you need it.
Depends on where one lives and works.

Is that how you get around in the winter when you can't ride your ... scooter anymore?
