Superbike Double Header Weekend @ Mosport - Aug 9, 10, 11

Anyone know what happened after the rider crashed in the first lap of the Superbike Amateur race (today, Sunday)? We were right at turn 8 and saw the whole thing but didn't stick around much longer after the race was cancelled. Didn't look like too bad of a crash but curious what happened anyway.

Were you able to see what kind of bike it was?

It is known that #13 Christian Auger crashed in corner 8 (coming off the back straightaway, very high speed). It is known that this crash brought an end to the race and to the day's events (the race was called complete after 2 laps). There are various second-hand accounts beyond that but let's not speculate.

Thoughts and prayers are needed. There is no good place to crash at Mosport but that particular spot is one of the worst.

True BP, just rumors at the moment.

But from the scene, it wasn't pretty :(

Hoping the rumors i hear are not correct.

Yes. It got worse later tho. From the 2 rider crash in corner 9 on the last lap, one of the wrecked bikes tumbled and struck my son in the thigh while he was leaned off his bike at the apex of 9. He managed to finish and we hope that it is only a soft tissue damage.

I hope and believe the 2 crashed riders were ok as well.

Congrats Tomas on the #1 Plate title for the CBR250.

We hope #112 will clinch the 2nd place position for the Series at Tremblant in 11 days.

Your boy witnessed a close call on the exit of Moss corner. Did he mention anything to you about the rider in front of him?

Approximately 5 minutes after the accident the rider's mother approached me near the approach to turn 8 (site of accident) and asked "What happened to her son?" She was looking for answers and directions to get closer to the scene. A friend of mine went with her and tried to help as she appeared to not understand English fully (or she was stressed by the situation). My friend helped her get answers and explained things to her husband per her request. As was passed on to me from my friend: rider was originally to go to a hospital in Bowmanville but it was quickly decided to airlift the rider to Sunny Brook in Toronto via the onsite helicopter. Approximately 45 minutes later, a Peterbrough Regional Police cruiser arrived on scene. Approx one hour later the bike had not been touched or moved. Someone showed my friend a video he made of the accident (he was recording the race as it passed down the back stretch and around turn 8.....) The rider was in a group of riders entering turn 8 and appears to just ride straight on. I have no knowledge of whether there was a bike failure or a rider failure (health issue????heart attack, seizure,....) No answer. No speculation. But best of luck and best wishes to the rider and their family! Sorry for writing this in 1 long paragraph as this happens at this site ever since I went to Windows 8.

I wasn't able to see the type of bike it was, no, but the rider is answered in the comments above. And based on how serious it may be after these comments I don't want to speculate, but I'll provide my account anyway.

I wasn't sure why he lost control; seemed a bit random to me. Anyway, the rider lowsided and he was sliding pretty quickly but he and the bike seemed to slow down quite a bit before hitting the hay. He didn't seem to receive any help or attention until about a minute afterwards; not sure why it took the officials so long to get to him considering there was a truck right close to him (race wasn't flagged immediately so maybe safety). Honestly I assumed that it would've been fine and was puzzled about the amount of attention that he was getting. Though this was my first time at Mosport and I may have misjudged his speed. I also understand that complications can occur and things can happen that you don't notice but make the outcome worse than you'd think. But initially it didn't seem like it would be as bad as it sounds. Sorry for the speculation but it's on the positive side...

Hope the rumors mentioned aren't true and for the rider to GWS.

I also thought it took way too long for anyone to respond to the incident that were immediately near by. However, the world is not perfect. There was apparently an accident investigation initiated as I heard Colin Fraser give instructions for nothing to be touched and to not walk on or near the path taken by the bike, prior to the police arrival. The situation is being taken very seriously for many reasons.

Regarding the turn 8 incident, this morning the rider is reported to be in ICU at Sunnybrook in serious but stable condition. That is far better than what the earlier speculation was indicating. Thoughts and prayers are still most certainly needed at this time.

Thanks for the update; that's relatively good news!

Race rescue cannot move until race control confirms that all race vehicles have stopped. At a track like Mosport, due to limited sight-lines, that requires that all flag stations report that their section of track is clear, and this takes time. It is very easy for a rider to miss seeing a red flag at the first flag station that they pass - it happens all the time. Imagine coming over that crest at corner 8 (280+ km/h) and having a rescue vehicle across the track. The worst thing that could happen is to make an already bad situation worse.

A minute of response time at Mosport is about right.
