What kind of terrain do you actually want to ride on?

Africa Twin concept was a desert sled, we have very little desert here.

Moab (y) Perfect place to own a big pseudo dirt bike.

Dirt roads, with HWY riding. If i wanted to run the bike let's say to NS at typical hwy speeds, Then i could do it with having the bike not peak at most of the trip
 
it would be okay for logging roads etc that are maintained a bit
if you're not in a hurry and want to smell the roses? sure

single track stuff would be no bueno
and any sort of aggressive off roading completely out of the question

Tenere 700 is being reported as working very well off road and with good highway manners. I'm thinking it's going to be my next bike but might be a little more dirt oriented then what you're looking for. With just dirt roads and long rips out to NS I would probably be looking at the Africa Twin.
 
Get something with a nice big soft compound, very wide radial tire,
tread pattern is almost irrelevant for gravel roads, it's not the tread that will bail you out it's the footprint and the rubber compounds. The radial design and width will bail you out in soft terrain, it's way better in soft sand or mud. The soft rubber is what you need for hard surfaces, rock or hardtop.

Perfect for Moab.

Tenere 700 is being reported as working very well off road and with good highway manners. I'm thinking it's going to be my next bike but might be a little more dirt oriented then what you're looking for. With just dirt roads and long rips out to NS I would probably be looking at the Africa Twin.
I was more looking to get away from the big adventure stuff, more to mid range. My KLR is a good bike and will do what i need it to, Both on and off hwy but it's older technology is a bit of a draw back. I was looking for something more modern with a few more comfort features
 
2 great options would be Yamaha Tenere 700 and KTM 790 Adventure
much more dirt oriented and also a lot more $$

I'd buy a used DL650S and get some DS tires on it
similar to your Versys but better for touring and light OR

Look at what LightCycle bought recently to put track drives on.

That's why I threw in the Tenere 700. I haven't ridden one yet but have sat on a couple. It feels like a big dual sport/enduro bike. With the ergos and at 450lbs wet I think its a legit option for someone who doesn't want a big ADV but still has dirt/highway capabilities.
 
^ I don't think you've ridden a modern supercharged bike. (There isn't a modern turbocharged bike.)

You are right, never ridden a supercharged bike (or car) . Unless you count my Suzuki Cruiser that was fitted with a Kuryakyn Hypercharger 1606239664977.png

I need to bone up on the latest forced induction tech.

I drive a car with a small turbocharged engine, my first turbo car was an '86. Power delivery in cars has been refined alot over the years, but turbos still have a distinctive lull - delay - kick unless you're already spooled up. Superchargers can be on at any RPM so they can eliminate the lag. Challenge for SCs is they take a ton of HP and fuel to make boost so they don't work well on smaller engines. Turbos on small engines and SCs on big ones.

It will be interesting to see what happens!
 
Couple grand more you could get a F750GS. Street bike with some dirt pretensions. Same class, IMO.

Also in the same vein and price: V-Strom 650XA Adv.
I like the look of the BMW, but i don't have confidence in the same way i do a honda as far as price for repairs, BMW would mostly need to go back to dealers for fixes

he does what you want to do on a Vstrom with great success
they are not sexy by any means
but are a versatile midsize bike with great reliability
apparently they are easy to fix after minor dirt naps too
 
Twin turbos on a diesel engine kick ass.

i was following his thread on the out west run he was on, very good information on his ride.

His new one is amazingly good looking. It's obviously not italian, but they have come a long way.
