I will be buying a new car in the next 2 weeks and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with installing a sunroof. Its gonna be and 06 or 07 mazda3. Ive called around and so far the quote is $1000( I m def. looking for a better price), but if that is the case then I will end up getting a year lower but with a sunroof.

Please let me know, thanx!

I know two people that have had aftermarket sunroofs installed, they both regret it after a few years. They leaked. But I have no idea how they were installed or by who.

Don't do it...
If you want a car with a sunroof then buy a car with a factory sunroof.
Don't install an aftermarket one because they tend to leak after a while.

However, if you want one installed I think 1000$ is on the cheap side for a good job.
... and if you found cheaper, I wouldn't trust the guy doing it.

Good Luck!

I had a friend that put one on a 2000 mustang for $250, but that was a while ago, thats why i think $1000 is a bit over priced.

I agree. Aftermarket sun roofs were big in the 90's and I know tint king used to do it. They are still around but there is nothing worse that driving around and the roof is leaking and dripping on you while you were driving. Leaking aftermarket sunroofs was a huge issue. Most don't do it anymore because of it. It also starts to mold the fabric in the roof.

Your friend got a REALLY good deal or a ****** job.

Good advice right there.

Dont cheap out if your looking to put in an aftermarket sunroof. Besides ive always found that you use them for the first month, cuz its there. After that month, youll never use it again.

whattttt!!! $1,000!!!
why bother?
Spend that money on something more important than a sun roof.
rims, tires, tints - or save it for reg maintenance oil changes, brakes, rustproofs

if you are hell bent on a sun roof, buy a car that has one already.

looking for an aftermarket sun roof combined with the cheapest price, seems to be a path destined for anger, frustration and regret.

moral of the story - get the year lower.

As most are saying stay clear of an aftermarket sunroof; Especially if car is not offered with one from the factory. The roof is a integral part of a uni-body and it contributes a significant part of the rigidity of chassis. An aftermarket sunroof could compromise the structure of the roof and apart for the leaking etc, impact the stiffness of the chassis and more importantly the safety of your car

I'll cut a hole in your roof and cover it in saran wrap for $100. :D

Stay well away from aftermarket sunroofs...they will start leaking and are absolutely horrendous things to deal with when the do start to leak.

i have an 06 3sport GT with factory sunroof. i like it.

i had a saturn with a sunroof i installed myself. never leaked, flew off once. cost me 40 total. hacked a hole, layed a door seal on the roof around the hole. used some latches to attach a piece of plexi to the roof and clamp down tight. worked great.

I work at Toyota in cambridge, and actually install sunroofs into corollas and the matrix.

I would highly recommend NOT installing an aftermarket one. A factory one has 4 drain hoses draining any water. (2 at the front, 2 at the rear)

Plus the structure of the roof is very different to allow the big opening in the roof. essentially you are compromising the integrity of the car if you put one in.

Buy a car with a factory installed sunroof, or you will never sell that car. I will tell everyone who considers buying a car with an aftermarket roof installed to run!

I got a sunroof installed in my Ranger and never had a problem. It was a powered sunroof with a sun shade. I sold the truck a couple of years ago without a problem.

I had it for about 8 years and it never leaked.

I paid $1100 for it.

Just curious, why do you want a sunroof? I ask because I have had two cars with them and I hated having them open during the day on a sunny day. There's not much fun in having the sun beating down on you, but I love having it open during the night. There's nothing like having it open with some trance on and driving out in the country on a nice summers night.

i just love sunroofs and feel too stuffy without one, I never drove a car without one actually , no sunroof is a deal breaker for me .

@rukus: Thats the one i want like an 05 mazda3 gt(standard), but not too many selling right now, Im looking for a private sale.

Just find a car with a sunroof. From what I've heard from anyone, aftermarket sunroofs suck. Heck, plenty of OEM roofs have problems.

Problems in the sense that it won't open and close or when it does open it's off track and doesn't go all the way back as it's supposed to. Mainly electrical issues.
The only time I have seen a factory roof leak is in an old rust bucket with LOTS of speed holes.
It's not fun driving in the rain and have water dripping all over you!
OP- save that 1000$ and put it to towards something more useful!
