Time to ramble a little...

I've had ample time to enumerate all the reasons things went wrong in a hurry, and how. Point 6, 10, and 11 from "Why We Crash" apply, combined with sleep deprivation, pain from working in the garage for the previous two days, as well as attempting a unfamiliar course after having made changes to the motorcycles operation.

Didn't come out of this unscathed, x-ray results pending, and we'll see what comes next. More bruises than breaks, and only 1/4" of lost skin where a glove split. I'm glad the bike still ran and it was able to carry me home. The joke of the day was the reduced range ... due to the huge dent in the tank.

I'm grateful for the golden horseshoe that must be lodged somewhere up my rear end, it could have been worse. I'm also grateful for @Soulcatcher668's help in pulling my bike out of the ditch and making sure I got home alight. A very kind group of cyclists happened upon us and lent a very big hand.

I'm also reminded by @Sochi's reply in my "Introduce Yourself" post. In the grand scheme of things, I optimistically think I'm currently somewhere around here:

Still figuring out what to do about the motorcycle. My very wise wife, and my family doctor, both insist that I cool it for the season until all the results are in. Slight grumbling aside... second hand parts are not hard to come by, but the total price of replacement parts comes pretty darn close to the $2300 price-tag of the whole motorcycle. Do I part it out and buy something else? Do I give in to emotion and fix it back up? Do I sell it as is?

No pressure to get off the fence any time soon, considering I can't even tie up my shoelaces without being in pain.

dang, you're getting close to the number of crashes I had, but still ways to go (just to make you feel better :)) But I never had tank dented like this tho, mostly fairings and other sticking out parts... if bike is pretty cheap - the only reasonable way to fix it up - used parts from ebay (*edit: or buy a parts bike - see below) and your own wrenching. Get better soon and back to the saddle I am sure you will. Cheers

Glad you're ok.

I'm assuming insurance isn't going to know about this hiccup and no first responders attended?

I don't think I would pay that much to fix it. Fix the parts that need fixed (eg the mirror stalk) and leave cosmetics alone. A running bike with bruises that can be safetied won't be worth a hell of a lot less than the bike mint (imo, although it will be harder to sell). If it eventually ends up in a future insurance claim for a future incident, all the money on repairs was basically lit on fire as odds are it will be a full write-off in any low-value bike crash (and even many high-value bike crashes).

I have no idea how much your insurance is. If you think you will be off for a while, it is a tossup between cancelling to stop the bleeding and the hit that may come from non-continuous coverage. The more you are paying now for the bike you won't ride much, the more the needle swings towards cancelling and getting insurance when you want to hit the road again. If you are going to cancel, sooner is better than later as this is peak $/day season.

Hope you get your bike fixed/sold and you get back out on two again. Don't let this little set-back deter you!
Safari all the bikes? Use this as an opportunity to make the bike unique.

It was not a good feeling to have my mirrors empty.
Things went about as well as they could have in the situation except for the fkn horseflies.
Your Marauder fired up like we had stopped for coffee, not taken a swim in the ditch.
Mend quickly and well.

If you want to up your crash-count, you should come dirtbike riding with me.

I fit in quite well out here in BC. I'm what you call a "tree-hugger"...

lol I do not count my dirt bike crashes into the total (good times when I had XR650L :)) - I am such a sh*ty dirt rider.

and I do plan to visit your neighborhood one day soon, but not to ride single track, more the mountains and shore - currently patiently waiting for the perfect used Africa Twin Super Adventure (Non DCT!!) to pop up for sale...

I've led lots of rides before. That's the worst feeling in the world - to look back and see someone missing in your mirrors.

That, or flashing cherries...
Almost as bad as looking ahead and seeing the rider up front go off-road and into a deep ditch, heart sinking feeling.

OP - glad you’re relatively alright. Take the time to assess your injuries as some pains will show up after a few more days and the healing process can be long. Take care of those pains, relax, and buy a new bike before I do so I can continue to be mocked.

GWS!

That's a lot of money for used parts! What are you looking to replace?

Get a parts bike for $500 and fix her up.

My worst is 1 RIP.

Second worst is 4 missing as they followed each other down a 30' embankment.

Now that’s a good idea. Buy a project bike, strip what you need to make your bike whole @monkeyfarm and then decide.

Let me know if you need a trailer and I’ll put the chock on the trailer this weekend.

Take the opportunity to look into Racer5/Fast school, maybe even with an off road school. Feedback from these courses will be far more beneficial than looking at a graph and will increase your confidence.

Good idea, appreciate the advice.

Glad you're ok.

No insurance or any other service involved. Physio will be covered by work insurance if needed, if I can keep my rates down, I wouldn't mind. I'm at $900/yr, considering the non-emotional value of the bike, I'd rather leave insurance alone.

I was also thinking of something like this. Have to tear into it a bit more to make sure there's no damage to the clutch or block, break lines, etc. Last thing I want is a sexy deat trap, although...

Things I've confirmed so far is the tank, speedo, headlamp, mirrors, clutch cable, possibly indicator and headlight controls.

Pre crash, the chain looks to be approaching end of life, so potentially sprockets as well. Seat could use some love, but DYI upholstery doesn't put me off.

A decent parts bike, especially at that price, would cover some of the things to be replaced.

I wish, celebrating a 40th anniversary in the family this weekend. Otherwise, not sure if you're serious but I am definitely keeping this in mind!

Sorry to hear about the mishap and glad that you are still around to pen about it on the forum. As the others have said, it is a "keep and repair" or a "sell and buy" decision. If the cost differential is minimal, I'd go for a replacement as in my experience, the repairs and mods are an elastic quantity.
