Summoned for Jury Selection / Duty

Wear a t-shirt that says "It's a white thing you WILL understand" on it (yes, I've seen one - FEAR show @ the Opera House). Dismissed. Next.

I've been summoned for jury duty only once. I got through the whole process and was the next person to be interviewed for the 12th member. (Unfortunately) the person ahead of me was selected and we were all sent home. I would have liked to serve just for the experience. Don't know if I'll be called up again.

Years ago I was asked and said it would be awkward at this time as I still had students in the lab. They granted a deferral as I said I would be available a month later, after term ended. I was pretty much Juror Candidate 1 and was chosen with no questions. An assault case from one of the local bars. Found her guilty after 4 days I think it was. Luckily I was paid by the University. Only time I've been called in 66 years that I can remember.
A four day trial over a bar fight? Was it an everyone join in brawl?

No, a three on one in the women's can. A lot of time spent in the jury room while things were discussed without us there. It was a pretty serious charge from what I recall, and a pretty severe beating. Three girls tying up a stall smoking and the victim needed to go pee.

I wonder about people like that, the perpetrators and what they think about their future.

I assume they don't think much, just react to the moment and complain in later life how everyone else was lucky.

So I'm guessing each of the three were charged with the same offense and had separate trials, or they singled one of them out?

From my recollection, all three were charged, but the one I was there for was determined to have been the instigator and/or worst offender. I believe the others got charged with lesser offences. I think their trial had already occurred.

Update: I was excused earlier today.

I sent them an email explaining my situation (financial hardship), and they requested a copy of my workplace policy outlining that JD is not paid.

They were really nice in that respect, I explained that I work at a small business and this is the first time we ever had to deal with someone getting called up, and as a result we didn't have any formal policies in place. They got back to me and said that I don't have to show up. Was quite surprised at how quickly the email conversation wrapped up.

Nice to know that I don't have to lose a day of pay, especially days before a dentist appointment (no insurance :$). Maybe I'll be more excited about doing JD if I ever get more financially comfortable and can just take time off willy nilly, LOL.

Agreed but unfortunately not all salary jobs pay time off. Some just deduct

If you get really "lucky", some companies pay you but tell you they expect you to complete your work as usual. Sit through court all day, work all night and repeat. Court days are normally shorter than business hours so you can get some calls in before and after.

Can you request being a juror for a CEO on trial?
