Okay, trying to help a friend pick a bike - looking for a bike that would be fun to ride, good on insurance and practical (ie, good for commuting/carrying a bag on the backseat/tail rack) . Not too old bike please. Any suggestions?

No Ninjas or Gixxer suggestions please.

2007 FZ-6 with Givi bags. Will be selling it in the spring.

Dude, SV650. Or SV1000. Very sporty, but doesn't shy away from carrying some extra gear.

Costs (for me) about 500/yr more than a 250R

F800ST. Perfect commuter bike. Great gas mileage, comfortable seating, good luggage capability and is fairly light weight for its type.

Could always go a vfr 800, nice smooth power curve makes it easy to ride around town

But yeah, i'm partial to FZ6, get that or even better, the FZ1.

+1. FZ6 is good on insurance, power and touring. Should do the trick.

my bike. 02 Suzuki Katana. Don't let the KM fool you I and the previous owners have kept the maintenance tip top and i have the records dating to 2002 to prove it.

Nice set up

$4,300 is steep for a 2001 VFR with over 80,000km.
I bought my 2000 model for $3,000 with 46,000 on it.
But yes, VFR is a great sport touring bike.
The 1998-2001 generation gets the highest reviews.
A bit hard to find for a decent price though, people think they're made of gold.

1st gen FZ1 is a great option as well. Cheap, comfortable, powerful.
FZ6 as well, don't confuse with FZ6R which is a travesty.

What about a Bandit 1200/1250? Another superb option.
For a smaller version 600/650. Or the GSX650.

SVs are recommended but they are a bit more sport than touring in terms of ergos.

FZ1, FZ6 and Bandit have very little forward lean while VFR is in between SVS and the afore mentioned two. SV650S is a much smaller and lighter bike then the others.

Katana 600/750 would be a bit similar to a 1st gen SV in terms of size and ergos. Not sure what the insurance is like on Katanas though. ... But they are probably the cheapest bikes on this list. I've seen quite a few listed for ~ $2,000.

Ninja 650R is another motorcycle that's worth checking out. Even Ninja 1000 if your friend has the loot.

There's an occasional Triumph Sprint that pops out on Kijiji.

First gen ZZR600. 2nd gen was a rebadged ZX-6R so not what your buddy wants.

There are many, many choices. Ask your friend to be more specific with price range, style, age.

Whatever you go for, consider adding the spiegler bar kit for that bike. Will make riding a lot more comfortable.

My buddy bought a GSX650F in the summer and has been very happy with the bike. Got a good price on it with all bags and so far nothing but praise for the bike.

My Triumph Tiger 1050 is less of an adventure bike than an upright sport bike if you want to look at something different. Really nice engine too and plenty of luggage carrying options.

Yeah, a Tiger or Duc ST2.

I know there are haters on this site, but I love my 650 versys. I commute about 130km round trip daily, and have put on about 12000 this season (and counting). I have Happy trails hard cases, a decent sized top box, ADV Monster aux led lights with highbeam bypass, heated grips, and barkbusters. Dead reliable, long service intervals, comfortable upright seating, and anything else I need in a commuter.
