Student Accounts

Back in the day, TD and Scotia had good student accounts. I haven't looked recently. Many banks will waive the fee on a normal account if you maintain $3000. Whether that is feasible for many students is a valid question.

RBC is offering $60.00 with condition, for opening a student account. The minimum balance for the student is way too tempting.

Any banks that have decent accounts for students? Are banks waiving the monthly fee for unlimited withdrawals? etc.
All offer a free student account with free e-transfer. The top tier banks, RBC and TD offer 25 debit transactions, as does BMO.

Tangerine CIBC and Scotia have unlimited transactions.

Remember you get what you pay for -- RBC and TD are the big dogs for a reason. You won't find their fees that onerous if you can get ATMs everywhere and telephone support 24/7/365.

You might want to look into where your kid will want a credit card. They're a little harder to come by.

Really? When I went to school, they were handing them out like candy. I'm glad they've tightened up that trap a bit.

Also remember Student accounts are for full time College and University students only (you will need to show proof of enrollment). Before that you will look for a Youth account.

Simply is free and works well
Simplii means you have to find CIBC ATMs. They have lots of them in urban areas, gets really expensive at $5/withdrawl if you're depending on other bank's cash machines. Pray you never need telephone help!

Never had an issue they are usually fast and easy to deal with on the phone? CIBC machines are easy enough for me and almost everything is done online. I don't think I have used a bank machine in 6 months either.
